I’m gonna have to say insufficient ring end gap.
The PN on the piston is from Wiseco. It’s a 4032 alloy forging..typically ran with very tight tolerances in the bore, because it doesn’t expand very much ( comparably) when it gets hot.
But the rings do...
The wrong end gap will cause them to butt when exposed to heat from too much of a power adder, and not enough timing removed. Certain alloys expand at different rates than the ring, and a “too tight” ring will basically cut the ring land right off the piston.
Thats what that looks like was starting to happen to me.

I'd have thought the crack would be near the gap in the ring (do they really expand that much to cover that much space?)

Does the ring end gap move around the piston or does the ring stay in the same place once in the bore? I've always wondered about that.

Rings are designed to rotate around the piston.

Opinions please. I've had this 83 GT hood scoop for years. Decided to plop it on to see what it looked like. I like it,and will cut out underneath to let the heat out.

I have an unexplainable affection for these.

Lots of good stuff in this thread. Best of luck going forward.

Sooner or later the car will realize what's happening and begin working [with] you.

Well, figured I'd show off the new AFR's,these things are sweet!
On another note, got my shortblock assembled. Ran into a major faux pas,all my fault. Went to torque the rod bolts and the crank would seize. After a few WTF moments, realized the Scat rods arent like factory,so half of them were backwards. Backwards you say? Factory rods are marked for direction, Scat are not. So the beveled edge that faces the crank journal was not on four holes. Sooo, that screwed up some rod bearings, and will probably have to polish the crank as well. This would've been running in two weeks, but due to my oversight a month out now

Finally time for an update. I'm sure like others, been waiting on parts. Got the stuff in needed and got to work. Had to swap four pistons around and the pins are held in by spiro loks. Spiro lok you say? Yeah, beelzebub himself designed these wretched things. They're just a spring steel retainer but they are a HUGE PITA to install. Anyway, got that done and, with a few snafus got the longblock assembled. We're getting close, only have to measure for pushrod length and that should button the engine up. Few pics to share as well as the one that started all this

Time for a small update. Engine is assembled, just waiting on pushrods. And I found out the hard way you can't install lifters after you put AFR heads on. You could with my Edelbrocks. There goes a $50 set of head gaskets. I did purchase the new Ford oil filter adapter,it was $130 but will get the current tiny filter off the header and rotated to a much better position.

Another small update, making progress but unfortunately the car is 40miles away and I can't get down there as often as I like. K-member is squared, easy job and it was only a 1/16" difference. Got my headers Cerakoted, this was expensive but should cut down alot of underhood heat. Going back down Sunday, get valves adjusted and lower intake on. Then off the stand to get flywheel/ clutch kit installed. I wanna drive my car!

This...took 4hrs yesterday. I actually feel dumber afterwards because this shouldn't have been that hard. To note, these are "C" springs, so not much shorter than stock. Was told external compressors wont work, and the internal didn't work either. Ended up using the long prybar, jack method. Not sure if the MM tool would've helped. Still have to do the other side

Finally got the engine completed, dropped right in with little fanfare. Wrestled with the engine mounts for a bit until we realized we had a much bigger problem......The ebay vendor sent a k-member for a Coyote or mod motor swapped Fox. I can't catch a break with this build.
