I hate to sound so noobish... but searching this site for explanations is making me dizzy... What exactly am I driving!? lol... I read PI/NPI N/A etc etc etc... rwhp, rwt blower this and turbo that lol... man, I need to learn about my car...

All I know, it's a 5spd standard, 4.6L (281) V8. Some links to techsplanations would be great. 0-60 times... 1/4... etc. It's stock for now. I'll be saving up to gear it to 3.73's or 3.90's soon... but I need more input ;)

the 96-98s were non pi (non performance improved, meaning they have diff cams heads and intake etc than the 99-04 cars) and are Naturally aspirated (NA, meaning no blower aka FI, forced induction) they made less Horse power and torque than the newer ones because of the intake, cam, and heads, tune etc.
Rwhp is the amount of horsepower that acctually makes it to the wheels through the drivetrain (power loss), engine horsepower is how much power you are making in the engine alone before drivetrain loss.the same goes with torque at the engine and rear wheel torque. as to those gears, look into 4.10s, on the highway cruising at 75 in an auto you run around 2800 rpm.
 
oh, you have a manual, you will turn slightly lower rpms than the auto becuase your transmission is geared different. you should also look into a short shifter, like the mgw, it is very nice, you cant go wrong with it.
 
A blower refers to a supercharger...basically that's what it does...blows/forces air into the intake to increase horsepower. Turbochargers are also a power adder but they basically suck air through the engine via exhuast.

Your car being a 2004 means it already has PI heads/intake/cams. The NPI cars were built from 96-98 and is also the first years of the 4.6L engine. Before 96 they were 5.0L.

You have a convertable and it is a little heavier than the coupe. On a good day you should see low 14's to high 13's in your car as is. Somebody with a vert chn chime in and verify.

As far as gears 4.10's work well in an auto BUT you will need a tune to correct shift points and speedometer. This is accomplished by either "flashing" or programing the computer for the modifications or by way of a separate programable chip that is inserted into the computer (ECU).

Isnt it more like exhaust gases spin a turbine, the spinning of that turbine forces air into the intake manifold which produces boost, which increases power.

whereas a supercharger uses a belt to spin a pulley which spins the turbine that forces air into the intake manifold which produces boost, etc etc.

Supercharger = turbine spins at lower RPM's and uses a belt instead of exhaust gases, gives power instantly

Turbocharger = turbine spins at higher RPM's (100k+ rms, gives the whistling noise of a turbo aka spooling) and gives power towards the middle and higher engine rpms (2500-6000rpms) because the first 2500rpms its spooling up to produce the boost.

Both do the same thing, just use a different means to get there.
 
Thanks guys :) This is a great start! Was just recently I found out what the heck a ricer is lmao... Glad to see those annoying Civic guys got a name lol.

I read up on the site posted in the FAQ's about installing the short shifter, seems simple enough. Does it make a big difference?
 
a short throw shifter makes a HUGE difference.. the reason why is that your stock shifter is not only longer (has long shifts) but it also has a huge piece of rubber between the shift handle and the actual shifter. This rubber is there to reduce tranny noises but it makes your shifting feel all flimsy. My Steeda Tri-Ax has no rubber piece there :)
