mother of god i think the steering took a crap

ok today with my mom driving the car backing out of the driveway to park it. I heard a low screeching noise with the rack and pinion everytime the wheel is turned.

plz tell me what this is sounds like its not lubricated or something.


and how much would a new one cost

i would want a performance one kinda has to be a power steering


im a big boy tho but a manual rack and pinion i heard is a nightmare

Check all the obvious things first, is there enough fluid in the ps resevoir, are the tie rods ends ok, and are the steering shaft and joints properly connected and not rubbing on something that worked loose?

well, ive been told its leaking tomorow im gona have to get er done and look at it,

ill bring a digi camera and post pics for everybody and u guys can give me some opinions

p/s pumps whine bad when they are low on fluid or going out............specially fords............

yep sounds like the ps motor is low on fluid, manual rack isn't that expensive think around 400 bucks with a new steering shaft.

depends on where it is leaking from. you may need to tighten up the lines to the rack or the pump or the little lines that run infront of the radiator. Or replace the hoses. If it's leaking out of the tie rod boots then the seals on the ends of the rack have gone bad and need to be replaced.

well i have alot of steering play and its not exactly the most responsive in the world......

i guess i can look at that tomorow but im all for getting manual steering if its not that horrible

If it was rough to drive I would have changed it back. It is actually not that bad to drive at all. No it is not as easy to steer as power but it is much easier than running a short belt.
Parking lots are a little harder. Thats when you notice it the most but livable.

see id be afraid to break my steering column or pop the steering wheel out of place from yanking on it so hard , does it ever get close to that?

tomorow im gona undo the power steering and see what its like w/o it out of curiousity

is it like power steering from like 30mph plus?

LoL.... I drove it every day for 3 1/2 years now and no problems. Break the steering column? No it never gets close to that. You must be thinking it is like when you run a short belt. It is A Lot Easier than undoing the power steering.
From 30 mph plus? You can't say it is like it because it isn't. It's different at any speed. Feels easier then slower speeds? Yes. Feels as easy as power steering with skinny's on.

I have a factory replacement rack for the 79-81 Mustang. Bought new tie rod ends while I was at it. I got it from Advanced Auto Parts for $110.00. Tie rod ends were $18.00 each. Also got the Flaming River adapter for $72.00 (Rip Off)
From a stop it is a little hard with my pony wheels. But not all your might. LoL

Remember a power steering rack was not meant to run without assist. A manual one was designed to run with no pump.

Just don't let all the p/s fluid run down, happened in my 87 4banger, harder than a mug to steer (not to mention really loud)

I have one in my capri.
It could be a real pain when trying to park in a parking lot if crowded but other than slow moving turning being alittle harder it's basicly the same as PS at hwy speeds.

I'm thinking about upgrading it though b4 we put the car back together just for the sake of having PS.

My wife doesn't like how hard the steering is in the manual so she won't drive it. So I might leave it manual.

Get a new power steering rack, they're only like 100 bucks. Manual steering is for suckers unless it's a track car.
