Picked up a key accessory for driving. Got it off Amazon for $25 or so

I mounted it here. Hated the idea of mounting something in the interior but it’s a necessary evil.

Did NOT drive the car this weekend. Thermostat housing was supposed to get delivered on Sat, which was a rainy day. Guess what? It got misdirected.

So delivery is tomorrow. Bummed about that but now I don’t have to rush getting the job done for father day weekend.

Also….picked up some light reading.

Quick glance through it and I realized what little I know about camshafts doesn’t even scratch the surface….

I hope you were able to find a thermostat housing for a reasonable price. The last one I bought was around $75, which was pretty hard to swallow after seeing them for $40 for years. Now they're listed for $210+ which is nuts. I would be going aftermarket at that price point.

At this point I need to retire and sell of all my damn parts who the f.... Is paying $210 for a thermostat housing, there $5-10 for an aftermarket one

I paid $20 for a clean used 90+ housing. I thought that was fair. I'm trying to avoid using aftermarket parts when i can, so I'd prefer a clean, used one if i can find them.

Hopefully it actually shows up today so I can clean it up, paint it and install it .

Its a none moving part as long as its machined correctly, aftermarket for those is fine be me, I usually tap them anyway for a fan temp probe, I probably have a dozen stock ones still bolted to lower intakes. There cheaper to buy then clean lol.

Arrived. Cleaned up, painted and tapped for a 3/8” not in case of future need. Now to get it on the car and fill with coolant.

90+ on left. You can see the subtle difference with the one on right that came on my car….other than the pitting

My sister in law's 2014 explorer limited (which for the most part I manage) has also turned into a money pit. 115k on it. Hubs, tie rods, control arms, bad coil, injector stuck ON, end links. Quoted $3800 for the water pump. Currently leaks outside, but I heard it can go internal and ruin the whole engine. Not impressed with this vehicle. Clearly this platform is flawed, I heard it affects the flex too.

Yeah. The water pump leak can go inside and dump coolant into the oil. Basically if it’s leaking external, get it in for repair ASAP before it costs you a motor.

I did my water pump back in March. I just threw a bunch more parts at this this past week so I think I have it at a good place for now. If it can last the summer without putting another cent into it, I consider that coming out ahead for now.

I’ve been actively saving for the next car…so I do have a plan.

The cars not a total turd as I make it out to be at times. I was getting an alignment today and the service manager was complimenting how clean it was for the mileage. I think I just might have high expectations for my vehicles.

Ok. Car is back together. New battery installed. Started filling with coolant, but too late to start engine and purge air.

Will do that tomorrow. A couple hot/cold cycles and pressure test the system and should be good to go.

That’s about it really. See how the A9L handles learning to run the combo but I’m still running the 19# injectors so need to address that next.

Her's is pretty nice itself, but i'm over it and i just don't think it's worth another 4 grand (not including the other tie rod and control arm that needs to be replaced) especially with a minor front end collision on the carfax. I found her another car to lease, she can afford it and it may make my life quite a bit easier. I'm in charge of roughly 6 vehicles and this explorer has been more trouble than all of them combined. Book is $9500 on trade in, probably lose a couple grand for the carfax, maybe another couple grand for the convenience of selling it to one of those car buying companies that will send it to auction. If that's how it plays out, i'm at peace with it. It's a nice vehicle, but not a good one unfortunately.
I'm sure the last hub will go soon and there is still 5 injectors waiting to get stuck and 4 more coils to fail so...

The $210 ones have the ford part number on them..... I called and asked.....

That's motorsport vs motorcraft... Motorcraft number probably double lol... They trying to make that 100% mark up on some parts these days lol. Then you got the dealership matrix pricing so yeah I could see them asking 210 and not batting an eye for a $2 cast part. Why I daily Lexus suvs for past 2 decades, last 200k on basic maintenance, before the trans gets questionable then sell it and upgrade to a newer one, rinse and repeat. Ford's getting out of hand on pricing for a lot of stuff.

filled the coolant and started the car. Let it idle a bit to purge the air and went for a drive. Temp maxed out right here, which is lower that it was with the 192 stat. Looks to be about right where I want to be with the 180 stat. Didn’t hook up a mechanical gauge this time, but with the 192 in between the R and M was about 195-200 degrees.

Later in the evening I pressure test the system and it was good to go.

I drove around a bit afterwards. Still feeling the car out, but it’s stout. It was a warm humid day, so AC was on the entire time.

Parked and was happy to see a nice “leak” under the car in the form of water condensation pouring out of the drain. You have no idea how happy I am to see this. Out of all the stuff I did to the car getting the ac working again was my favorite
