I think i figured out why the bullitt wheels don't look right to me. I think the reason I loved them on my '03 GT was because it was a light colored car. On a dark car, they just don't stand out as much.


Same wheels on my silver '03 GT. I LOVED this look. Not quite the same on a black car. I may have to rethink my wheels now





In comparison, just not the same effect on a dark car.

Scored a '97 explorer intake off Craigslist. I already have a Cobra Intake on my car, but the early 96/97 Explorers come with a RF-F87E-9K461-BA lower intake manifold that are EXACTLY the same lower in the 1993 Cobra Intake kit from Ford that I have. I just need to drill and tap the ACT hole.

I got this because i want to clean it up, paint it and send it to TMOSS for some custom porting. That way when i do my H/C/I i have it ready to go rather than send out the one on my car and wait.

The upper is useless to me. Unsure what i'll do with it. From what i understand the early intake are desireable because they have the EGR provisions and thicker flanges. I might sell it, i might keep it on the wall as a paperweight. Who knows

Picked up some more stuff over the weekend.

Yes, i am probably the first person on stangnet ever to seek out, then clean up, degrease and paint up a smog pump to reinstall on my car . I cleaned the hell out of the hoses and bypass valves. They look brandy new. Everything does in fact except the pipe, but some paint will fix that.


I yanked mine off years ago when i went off-road, but ended up putting the stock h-pipe back on when i got sick of no cats. Ended up clogging the cats.

So before i order my Mangaflow catted mid-pipe...i'm putting the pump back on. If anyone's wondering...this stuff weighs 10 pounds.

After this is all set...i start to gather parts to REinstall the A/C on the car. I scored a nice vacuum pump from work, so i'll be able to pull down a good vac before adding the freon. If anyone has some a/c parts locao to MA, let me know

Ok, so i've been spending my time this winter cleaning up stuff under the hood. I pulled the VC's off, blasted them and repainted, and have painted up some misc brackets and such. Cleaned the intake, painted the EGR and throttle body, ditched the breather and went back to stock cap and valve cover vac tube, ditched the CAI and back to stock airbox. I've been retaping wiring, and replacing vacuum hoses. Beem pulling off whatever parts I can get off without too much work, degreasing and cleaning them up. Replacing rusted bolts or hose clamps, with zinc-plated bolts

Making progress, but not done. NExt up, the front accessories are coming off. I want to blast and paint them up. The Power Steering pump bracket is the biggest thing bothering me...as well as the rusted PS hose...so gonna replace it.

Anyway, still not up to my standard, but it will never be until I pull the engine out and repaint the bay and clean up and paint EVERYTHING the way I want it. But it will have to do for now.

Okay, you guys are gonna get a kick out of this.

If you've been following my progress, this should be nothing new to how I approach things.......but.....













I rebuilt my smog pump.


Okay, i guess i screwed up a bit. I washed my smog pump to clean the grease and grime off, and got water inside. So the bearing seized. Oh well. I wasn't about to toss it in the trash and go get a new one. So i decided to take it apart.

You need a press, but it comes apart easy. The bearing is a standard bearing. It's a KOYO 6203-2RS bearing...standard 40mm OD x 17mm shaft x 12mm thick sealed bearing. If you google that, you'll find it's common and available under $10. So if anyone's smog pump ever seizes..you can rebuild it fairly cheap. You just need access to a press.

So, new bearing on the way. Gonna give the housing to my buddy to sandblast and i'll paint it up nicely and then reassemble. Already painted the pulley up, and got new Stainless steel allen bolt hardware to bolt it all up together. I'm just gonna lightly clean up the internal rotor and flush it with WD-40.


Smog pump bearing is a KOYO 6203-2RS bearing...standard 40mm OD x 17mm shaft x 12mm thick sealed bearing. About $5

If you disassemble the smog pump.(a bit tricky, but not hard once you understand how it comes apart) you'll find that bearing can be replaced.

Beats buying an entire pump.

More parts came in today.

I was gonna go used for my A/C reinstall, but decided i didn't want to deal with rusted, dirty, 20 year old stuff. Beleive it or not, you can still buy new Ford stuff...although it's prob made in china by now.

I'm going new on the compressor and condensor as well. I figure i've spent $230 so far, i don't want to use it with total junk. I just need to wait a few weeks to refresh my budget. I ordered about $200 worth of stuff for my G35 as well.

Okay, spend the day removing more stuff from under the hood to clean up. Took my SN95 E-fan off, and remove the accessories. Gonna have a buddy sandblast a few brackets and such. Just need to decide what colors to paint them.

Haven't taken the P/S pump off because i need to figure out how to pull the pulley off. That al bracket needs to be blasted and painted too, and i want to replace that rusty PS hose.

Also, i'm test fitting my stock fan shroud back in. I want to mount the round e-fan inside it so it has a stock look to it, but is an electric fan inside. I was testing the shroud, but forget how it attaches at the bottom. Is there a bracket or something for the lower fan shroud mount??


*sigh* This is gonna keep me up at night. I REALLY want to pull the engine and clean this up. I don't really have any leaks or anything. The 22 years of road (plus 6 years of sitting) grime needs to go badly. I want to yank the engine so i can clean everything up and make it look new. Until then, i guess i'll have to wirebrush this off the best I can for now. I HATE this..ugh you have no idea how much this bothers me. (actually...if you've been following and see some of the stuff i've done, you prob have a good idea how much it does)





Where it stands today. Gonna get my accessories all cleaned up and painted up and then decide what to do with the fan.

Ok, new wheels




This puts an unexpected damper on my budget. I was expecting to just buy the 1 more bullitt wheel I needed and would have my wheels...but I ended up buying these. So i'll prob sell my bullitts and '97 cobra wheels once these are mounted.

Not even Jan and i've already spent a ton on the Mustang....gonna take it easy for a few months and just limit myself to painting/cleaning and such...so it should be quiet around here.

Got the PS pulley off today. Was a peice of cake. Took me longer to rent the damn tool at Autozone because I was behind some guy buying brakes for his "96 Honda" and didn't even know what model it was. A quick call to his wife to read the back of the car confirmed it as a Civic.


Anyway i also started polishing up the wheels today. Gone is the slight haze they had. Tossed 3 coats of wax on top after and waxed the backside of the wheels too. Gonna do 2 and then go get tires in pair. Haven't decided what tires to go with yet though.

Did it by hand too. Applied with a soft rag and rubbed it in and wiped it off. About 15 mins of work did the above. Still gotta do 3 wheels though

Okay, well sandblasted a few more things. Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you...that's a smog pump housing


Painted everything up, and tomorrow i'm gonna press the NEW bearing back into the smog pump and reassemble it. Should be good as new.


I just need to figure out how to paint up the alternator now without getting evrything inside painted as well.




I have the PS pump all cleaned up, i just need to disassemble the tensiorer so i can blast it and paint it and the pulley up. The pulley bolt on the tensioner is Reverse thread right?

You gotta press it out. Basically you unscrew the back and use a screwdriver to pry the back part off. Then you have the big rotating drum inside. Stand the pump straight up on two bars so that the center drum can fall through and basically press it out from the top.

It's actually a little tricky how it presses together. The bearing presses onto the shaft of the drum, which presses into the housing and then the pulley part presses onto the shaft outside of the pump.

Was pretty easy to take apart, but a little tricky to get back together. I reassembled mine tonight and had to give it a few tries, but here is is all sandblasted, painted, clearcoated, brand new bearing and lubricated. It spins niiiiiice. Gonna replace the hardware with SS allen headed bolts tomorrow just to give it a more finished look.

Okay, think i'm pretty much done.

Most of the front accessories are painted. I was going to disassemble the alt and paint it, but in the end decided not too because I don't want to risk damaging a reliable alt. At some point, i will replace the pulley with a new one. It's an ASP 1 7/8 OD pulley i run to counter the underdrives. So it needs to either be painted or replaced.

Just gonna paint the SN95 e-fan shroud up and reinstall it and call it a day under the hood. I'm getting my Magnaflow catted H-pipe as a bday gift due to all the Summitt gift cards I know have..so i can ditch the clogged stock h-pipe.

I still plan on reinstalling the A/C....but me and the bank are $10K apart on a condo offer right now so my financial priorities right now will be dedicated to that at least until i settle in. I need a set of tires on the G35as well, so the $600 or so i had set aside for the tires on the 04GT wheels I got will have to wait and may have to go to the DD. Guess i might have to drive on the 97 Cobra wheels a little while longer. Sucks being responsible.

It's high temp engine paint. Aluminum is the color. I did the pulley in black and then I used high temp clear coat on everything afterwards. Everything was taken off the car and disassembled

I had a buddy sandblast the parts for him. I just provided him the parts all disassembled and he took care of it in a blasting cabinet. When i got them back, i wiped them down with alcohol, and then prepped the parts using the "metal ready" prep that comes with POR-15. I had a ton of it left over. Vinegar will do the same thing to "etch" the parts so the paint will stick better. Then i sprayed a few coated and let dry a day or two.

I didn't paint the WP or the alt, but the color is close. If i yank the engine out, EVERYthing is getting painted. I'd prob replace all the hardware with zinc coated hardware as well.




Anyway, i did a few more things today. I hooked the smog tube up to the Hpipe, and gave the car an oil change so i could replace the leaking oil sender gasket. It was hard and brittle, so def was overdue changing it. It was leaking badly enough to start coating the underside in oil. So i spent about 45 mins wiping it all down. Also installed two new oil pan gaskets as well. Believe it or not, i've never changed the gaskets. They sealed fine..until now. They could be original to 1988 for all i know. So now two new pan gaskets and oil sender gasket..should be good I hope.

Also found my PS low pressure hose leaking. Guess when i took the pumo out, i must have loosened it a bit where it connects to the cooler down before, because I found it leaking a small puddle from there. The clamp was rusted so i couldn't tighten it. Had to cut the hose off. Will have to get another one and two new clamps. Should have did this in the beginning.

I also decided to reinstall the SN95 fan, but with a black summit catch can bottle. No more big red bottle. Gonne fab up some new mounting brackets and bolt it on. Should be it under the hood.

I'll prob change the tranny fluid. I had a leaking VSS that i fixed, so i prob lost 1/2 a quart. Even though i only drive 600 miles, i'll just change the fluid since the trans is a fresh rebuild.

After that, car goes back on the ground and it will almost be spring!

Okay,few more goodies. Nothing really major, but this is a progress thread so gotta update with what i'm doing.


I ordered:

-My lugnuts for the polished GT wheels. I wanted to go with an internal style lug.

-Summit black coolant bottle...to replace the red one in there now

-My e-fan is cleaned up and painted satin black so it will look new. New brackets and the new black bottle.

-New PS return hose and rack to cooler hose. I should have ordered the main feed hose as well, but didn't. Oh well..next time.

-10 Oil pan drain gaskets only because they were 40 cents each and I needed some. Figured i might as well stock up. For $4 who can complain


So this weekend i'm gonna replace the PS hoses with new clamps so everything is tight and leak free, and work on getting the SN95 fan mounted back up. If i have time, i'll do a trans fluid change as well.


Unfortunately, gotta hold off on the tires for now

Okay, for the sake of showing the finished product, i painted the fan flat black and installed a BLACK summit racing catch bottle. Some of you will remember i had the red one on.

SO, engine is done for now. Anything else I do will be when i yank the engine out...soon I hope.

Bad news...my damn Rear Main Seal is leaking! It's got 600 miles on it and is a Ford part! Grrr.. Anyway it's just a slow seep it seems, not gonna worry too much about it, but still WTF I just replaced it! I HATE oil leaks. I just replaced the two oil plug seals and the low oil fluid sensor gasket as well to try to eliminate leaks.


BTW, i also discovered my 15" spare tire will not clear the rear cobra brakes...so i need to find a bigger spare now

So i decided to go with BBK Long tubes.....

Spied this on Craigslist for cheap. Barely even used..the inside is still clean and soot-free. Was cheap enough so i picked it up even though I'll more than likely go with cats. At least I have it...and i can always sell it for what I paid easily. I'll prob paint it up with some high temp exhaust paint.

Scouting around for some BBK 1 5/8 ceramic shorties for sale locally before I pull the trigger on ordering them new from Summit.

These should go well in making torque along with my GT-40P's.

Hmm...i could prob do that. Buy two of these and have a shop weld them in for me?

~ $70 each or so. I don't need to pass emmissions at all...i just don't want to run around catless. So as long as some sort of cat is there, i'm fine.
