Here's part of the why.

Going to run the same exact cobra rotor, but as you can see, the newer generation of PBR caliper wraps around the rotor more, has a lot more pad surface area and sweeps the rotor more. They are also stiffer.

I'll elaborate more if I can make these work. Prob pull a wheel off during the week

Adding some more parts to the parts pile.

Decided I want to change out the 3.73s to 3.27s. Car is more of a cruiser now. I want a little more time in each gear.

I'll change these out myself. I figure I have the technical know-how now. When I got my 3.73s in, I was 18, so that was the only time I ever paid soneone to do work on my car.

Maybe I'll tackle it over the winter

I've driven a 3.08 geared fox and honestly loved it with a 5-spd. Add a little power to the motor and that long 2nd and 3rd pull was awesome.

I put 3.73s in because my car used to be an AOD. It was great with the auto, but now that I have a stick, and not really racing, I want something lower.

When I had my 2003 GT, I loved the 3.27s in it. Never had any desire to change them out

Yeah I dunno why ford bothered with the 2.73s. Like I said, I drove a fox with factory 3.08s and a good gt40p combo and it was fun. Still had enough power to rip the wheels loose in 2nd and 3rd, and had nice long pulls in the highway.

I just figure I'd try a little more gear than that, so 3.27 it is.

Around here, everywhere I go is a 30 min highway ride at 80moh, so looking for a little lower RPM.

Damn, they clear 17's barely

Not a whole lot of room. No pads either, so if pads push it further away from the rotor face, this may not work

C5 brakes?

Yup, c5 caliper and z51 abutment brackets.

Standard c5 caliper clears a 12.75" rotor. The cobra rotors are 13.1" so that won't work. But the 2008+ with z51 option got brackets that clear a 13.4" rotor.

Not 100% bolt on though. First off, the GM caliper bolts are slightly larger. Secondly, the bolt holes on the SN95 spindle are off by 1mm.

So, you need to hog out the holes sightly on the sn95 spindle.

OR,

Buy brackets made for baer with are the z51 style brackets with bolt threading for the sn95 spindle. Baer part number CBK332325. The p/n stamped on the bracket itself is K332-216C1 Then it's a 100% direct bolt on.

Prob is, they are discontinued. Baer was selling this kit for mustangs up Til a few years ago. Now 6 piston setups are all the rage.

I'll prob try and find the Baer brackets. I don't want to hack up my spindles.

Why?
The newer PBRs are like the 99-04 versions. They are stiffer, have larger pads, and contact much more of the rotor. They are just an updated revision to the c4/cobra style caliper which is dated to around 1991/1992.

I'll post more on this if I find the correct brackets. Only way I'll follow through is if it's a bolt on project.

Man that's a cool swap. Wish I remember what the c6 brake sizes were.

Same as c5. Base gets 12.75" but z51 package is 13.4". Caliper is revised slightly so it's a bit stiffer than c5 caliper. Those are the ones to get, but since they are newer prices are higher and supply less.

Baer sold these calipers in the kit for the Mustang.

I'm searching for a set of the brackets. I just don't feel like modifying my spindles.

There isn't a link for them. Just gotta call up and order. P/N CBK322325. $135 each :(

Of course, I want to get it set up on the car first before proclaiming "this is how you do it".

Remind me again how the vette caliper is better please?

Stiffer caliper, larger pad area, more of the rotor face is swept. Caliper is about 4 lbs heavier than the Cobra-style PBR, so should help absorb some heat. Piston size is the same, but modulation should be better due to less caliper flex, and more pad surface area. Pad selection is larger, and cheaper. Can also accommodate a 1.25" thick rotor, vs a 1.1" thick rotor on the cobra calipers. I'll explore that later on.

The caliper says Vette, but these are pretty much the same calipers Baer supplies in the GT plus kit for SN95 mustangs. They are the next gen over the Cobra/C4 calipers. The base c6 caliper has additional ribbing to make it stiffer than the C5 caliper

Do I need to do this? Prob not. But it's a project I want to tinker around with since I have an infatuation with brake performance.

They do work. I have seen the green 85 you mention at mustang week with them on the car and driving.

Yup. Where I got the idea from. It's "different", yet does offer a bit of an upgrade over the C4/Cobra PBRs

This is interesting, I have never heard of such a swap. If you find that they work out properly, I would be interested in your PBR calipers for my stock pile I am going to start.

I'm actually a bit of a hoarder. I've currently got two sets of Cobra PBR's, so i'll probably just hang onto these as well.

Parts aren't due in til next week, so i'll update then. I still need to located a passenger side C5 caliper. I have everything else ready to go.

Ok. Mustang specific brackets showed up.

They are nicely zinc washed, but I'll give them a blast of black paint. Or not. Can't decide.

As you can see, these are not modified, but specifically drilled for sn95 spindle

Now to find time to install. Brake pads are in the mail, need to get rotors resurfaced as well.

Found some time to start my teardown after ordering some parts. In the meantime, too a few rides. Looks like 35 miles is all I'll get for the year.

Of course, I ordered new rotors and of course they won't be here Til Friday. So i twiddled my thumbs a tad

But, the new brackets bolt on like promised. No mods required.

And, pad difference

After my rotors get here, I'll post pics after final install.

Oh, front hub sounds a bit crunchy. Got a new one on order.

Front of car is left. I know they look backwards, but the internal cooling vanes are directional and are set to be trailing in this pic. So from a functional standpoint it is right.

Waiting on my new hub before full assembly. They must have sent it by horse because it's not due til next Friday.

This took all of 5 mins. Easiest hub swap ever. Took nut off with impact, then needed 3jaw puller to yank off the hub.

Inside bearings were gold and the grease looked questionable. Definitely showed the signs of a hub that has sat stationary most of the last 10 years. I'll change the other one out when I get to the other side regardless of condition

New hub and nut aren't here until Thursday :(

Hub came in. Installed and so much better. Need to check the other side.

Anyway, got one side together and bled. Pretty straightforward and 100% bolt on. Got some new rotors as well.

Dont have a matching caliper for other side, so onto the rear. Matching rotors, and need to freshen up that caliper

Mach 1 caliper has seen better days. I'll restore this to original finish
