Can I sidetrack you for a moment? Lol. My '94 has a pretty good but old black paint job. It needs buffed badly-has swirls and scratches. It sat for a couple years under a tree before I bought it, I've used cleaner paste waxes and many black paint related cleaners,but always has swirls and the scratches.What would be the best way to polish it up?
Depends on the depth of the scratches wether you'll be able to take them out.
On a factory paint job, at the most, I would get some 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper and sand fairly lightly over the area to remove the surface scratches, use a water bottle to keep it wet where you sand, put a few drops of dish soap in the water as well, not much though.
Then buff, I use mainly 3m's buffing system. I start with a wool pad (I like their white wool pads, though their yellow are more gentle and less likely to cut through your paint job)to remove the sanding scratches(also your surface scratches not deep enough to warrant color sanding with the 2000G. Then go to their grey foam pad with a glazing compound. Then to finish it off because you have a dark colored car, I use their blue foam pad with the blue finish glaze. When you use the blue glaze, only do small portions at a time and wipe the surface with a very soft cloth. Walmart has some nice(and cheap) detail clothes that I like to use. Keep the rags clean though, it's good to shake them periodically while buffing to keep the dust and dirt out of them.
Dark colored cars are a bitch for this reason. A black car is awesome to look at, but a bit of a pita to maintain.
Some of the problems you may have from sitting under a tree is the sap from the tree getting on to your paint. It's very acidic and will eventually eat through the entire paint job. Don't let leaves stay on your car either, beyond the acid in them, the moisture will eventually cause a failure in your clear coat.

It's definitely a repainted car,has goofy red inserts and lettering I covered with a ford logo sticker lol. Thanks for the step by step how to, I really appreciate it. I've buffed a bunch of cars-the black scares me though. It no longer lives around a tree,spends most of the time in the garage with a hurt trans. But with nice weather upon us it's time to clean it up and take it. Apart lol
You sir, have a dedication I havent had since college, lol. 06:29, and you are cracking a beer! Last time I did that I was tailgating for a Hawkeye football game. But there is something about nice weather, and a calm, quiet garage. You are making me a very jealous person!
Be prepared to spend at least a full day buffing your car out if you want it to look right.
Bright side is, once you did that big job, it's relatively easy to upkeep.
Use a carnuba (natural) wax if you can, less chemicals on your paint, the better.
I decided to just take the wiring harness for the rear out to make life easier. Those clips with electrical tape holding them to the wires? It's not so good after thirty years. Easy fix, I actually keep enough rolls of electrical tape around to bind up all my children and hang them from the ceiling.
This is glossy POR 15 btw, my paint jobber at work gave it to me at no charge. Gift horse rode in, don't care if his teeth are shiny or not.
BTW, t-top brackets make a nice light holder!
