I've got a 331 short block on the way.

I am shooting for a warmed up street car that I can use for my daily driver but also has good performance, good street manners, and decent gas mileage...a good all around driver. So with that in mind, here's what I have picked out for my combo:

TFS-1 Cam
FRPP 1.6 Roller Rockers
Thumper heads
Pypes coated shorty headers
T-Moss intake
stock 19 lb injectors
stock throttle body

Ideally, I'd like to get 275-300 rwhp.

Any suggestions to improve this combo? Would 24 lb injectors and a larger throttle body give me a better balance with the extra cubes?

I would go up to 24 lb injectors and a 65mm or 70mm throttle body. which upper and lower are you going to be using. cobra? By thumper heads I assume thumper ported? E7s? Just a few questions to get more information from your combo.

the heads, cam and TB you have choosen will choke the
**** out of that engine.

Will serioulsy limit your top end power.

you could get 275rwhp with those parts on 302

get a cam with more durration
get a bigger TB - 70-75mm
get a bigger MAF 76mm min

331 will overload 19's and still push 24's to their limit.

With the right heads, cam and intake a 331 can put down 325+rwhp

AFR 185's would be better if you can afford them
and TFS stg2 cam or CompCams XFI stroker cam
the extra displacement needs a cam that opens soon and closes
later to give it time to fill those extra cubes with the air it wants.

my 331 went 12.0s on c9 heads and 11.10s with a 150shot. I Just got a set of tw heads as i knew the c9s were choking me off. You will have decent power with that setup but no living up to the motors potential. Oh and you really dont need a stroker to make 275-300rwhp! A good set of cylinder heads on a 302 will get you that

I may have the stock intake ported by T-moss. I'd like to go Street Heat, budget will probably not allow that at least initially.

Ported E7's (thumper) for now on the heads...again, budget!

Would the 24lb injectors and 70 mm TB still give me decent gas mileage (I'm commuting 150 miles/day)? I've kept my HP/TQ goals conservative for this reason.

Are the Stage 2 and XFI stroker cam street friendly? I'm commuting 150 miles/day so good street manners and decent mileage are a must. Should I consider a custom ground cam?

I believe I'm definately going to the 24 lb injectors. AFR heads would be great, but don't have the ca$h right now.

If I could get say, 325 rwhp and still get 20 mpg on the freeway, I'd be thrilled! Can I get there with 24 lb injectors, ported E7's, ported stock intake, 70mm TB and 76mm MAF?

NO......well maybe! The e7s would have to have more money in them than what you could buy a set of afrs for

Whoah! What intake are you using? What freeway mileage do you get with that combo?

Edit: I'm a moron, just saw the Systemax II intake...

Alright, I'll settle for 18!

How does the LS-1 get 25+ mpg and make the power that it does?

with my combo I would say that I could get an untuned 19-20 mpg if not more if the majority of the 150 miles were on the highway. I have a 75mm TB. The stage 2 cam will be lopey and may be too aggressive for a DD IMO. There may be some clips of the cam on here so you can hear what it sounds like.

I'll eventually add on the "go fast" parts when my commute decreases in a year or two. That's why I went 331 on the bottom end. But for now my goals are as stated.

Well then compare the 4.6 or 5.4 to the LS-1...same result.

I'm not trying to be contentious, I'm genuinely interested in understanding why.

I get 14 mpg but I have a AOD. Get a Comp Cams XE cam. I have the 274 cam and it's very streetable in my car. Find a used Typhoon intake or something. A 331 with stock heads is gonna suffocate. Spend the money on good heads and intake instead of the stroker engine. It'll be more power for now and later when you get your stroker you will be rewarded with oodles of tourque and HP

Thanks I'll give the XE cam a good look. I may just go ahead bite the bullet and get some afr 185's. The 331 shortblock is already on the way.
