Meh.....

Anybody, and Everybody willing to make a pymt can have one of those cars. They're soul-less. You go to a car show, and there are dozens of S550 cars in the line,.....There isn't any one of them any different from the rest, save for the color and wheels.
The day I sell the car that I have, and settle for something that anybody else with a fat wallet can have,..is the same day I start signing my name with an X.

Some ppl buy vehicles for other reasons than standing out and being different. Some buy for the enjoyment they get driving it, or even because they really fall in love with the car regardless of other's opinions.

This is why I decided to get into a trade... the union has been great FREE education and FREE continued education. Also as long as I pass the courses I can get all the certifications I can handle FREE.

They even put me to work as I went to school, if I got laid off they put me on the list. When a job came up I went back out to work making a decent wage and getting my education.
College isn't for everyone and every skilled trade imaginable is in demand right now.

I have friends who amassed hundreds of thousands in debt going to school..... I make more yearly than all but one of them, he works for his daddy.

I actually paid off my school loans via the electrical trade. I was union and in the trade for 10 years. But in my early 20s I was doing state contract work and taking as much OT as I could. I'd do 80hr+ weeks without blinking an eye.

I left the trade in my late 20s for specific reasons, but miss it sometimes. These days I just do small jobs for friends and family.

When I was your son's age, I blew all my money on my Mustang. 19 years later, I still have the Mustang, but the money seems to go elsewhere. It's just the way life works. I just got my bonus check for the year, and it is already spent. I have 14 pine trees that need removing because they were destroyed in the last storm, and an AC unit that has to be replaced. You should have told him that the Focus RS was a much better bang for the buck though.

Just to add, several years ago we hired a phd in engineering from MIT with zero practical experience but all the fancy degrees. Didn't know what an npt fitting was, and practically demanded $95+k starting pay. They lasted 6 months.

glad you had a better experience getting "engineers" right out of college than we did at SBD. they were nothing but book smart, came up with ideas that sounded good on paper but in the real world it made my life as a designer hell. then the way they would do their modeling and linking made things hell on people who had to go back and change things later on.

FWIW when i started at black and decker i was an intern, i learned the way they wanted things done and worked my way up. i've always been a very hands on person so i've always tried to design things in a way that made them easier to assemble. it seems like that is something a lot of the engineers i've worked with over the years had forgotten how to do.

I have always been told the best engineers are those tradesmen who decide to further there education. Then they have field experience and an appreciation for what it takes to get something done.

There is nothing like trying to finagle something together out in the field that some new engineer cooked up.

Oh trust me, we get those plenty of times as well.

We brought on a new engineer about 3 months ago, and I've already spent some time fixing dwgs or redesigning impossible to machine components.

Yep, because driving a well built car with lots of power and handling capability without having to do the Indian Rain Dance (or use tools) to get it in and out of the driveway, just sucks balls.

Just know that before you buy a new DD vehicle that you should NOT look at safety ratings, TSB's, online forum stickies, you should use a local CAR SHOW as a basis of your next $30k+ purchase.

How would that interning process work? My kids are still very, very young, but I'd love to know how to get them started off on the right foot in a career like that if they were so inclined.

I want to make it clear to my kids that there are more options for them than college. Whatever they end up choosing as a career, it needs to be viable. I ain't paying for any liberal arts and gender studies degrees.

i went to a tech highschool and got my internship with black and decker my SR year.

So we have a pretty formal intern program here. We actually put out a job description and accept resumes from college students in the area in whatever discipline we have an open internship position for (engineering, marketing, sales, product management, etc.) so we'll get students with engineering, marketing or business backgrounds. Try doing a job search in your area under "intern" and see if companies have similar programs in your neck of the woods. Bigger companies have more formal programs, while smaller companies might just hire on someone with less of the fuss we put them through here.

The resumes are usually 1-page or so detailing out achievements in HS and such. Honors programs, GPA, extracurriculars, clubs, sports, job experience (if something worthwhile), volunteer work, etc. We'll actually bring them in and do a quick interview. Nothing hard, just a 15-30min meet and greet as we don't expect them to really know much, but at the same time you want to meet the person who will be part of your team. These aren't top kids from top schools either. Most are pretty average kids who live locally who are actually putting themselves out there to try to get ahead.

From there, they come in, get a formal orientation, meet up with their manager (I have two interns under me this summer), and we put them to work for the summer. Typically running out and getting coffee is NOT what they do for us. I'll give my engineering interns actual CAD projects and expect drawings out of them. While they are doing work for us, we try to teach them and get them engaged as well by giving them a diverse, and interesting workload.

It's also a paid internship here, with starting pay this year at $18.

As far as I know, every senior last year got a job when they graduated. My company hired on at least one of them from last years pool. One intern I had actually worked for 3 different companies through college and had a VERY good resume when he graduated. He got scooped up right away.

FYI: I did not go through such a program myself. I still managed to do ok, but getting my foot in the door for that first interview was a bit harder than if I went through an intern program like ours.

Except in my circle that I hang out with, everyone drives SUV's with kiddie seats in the back, or a Subaru. An S550 would get all the soccer moms begging for a ride.
