I want to make it clear to my kids that there are more options for them than college. Whatever they end up choosing as a career, it needs to be viable. I ain't paying for any liberal arts and gender studies degrees.

What @Mustang5L5 said is how my work does it too. We sometimes hire interns during the summer when they're on break. The get paid a fair wage too. Where I live we have STEM/STEAM programs that are involved in Engineering. Our voted Levies also provide our High School with a program called PLTW (project lead the way), it's an Engineering program that begins in 9th grade (introduction to Engineering), 10th grade (POE, Principals of Engineering), 11th grade you pick a field, either Civil Engineering and Architecture or Aeronautical Engineering (this is a college credit course for free!), Senior year is your final project exam and gets more detailed and discipline focused. I bought my house just for this school district and I have hopes my son will be interested in a career as either and Engineer or Architect.

The company I work for also will help pay for my sons education and also pays 75% of my work related education.

And those are the sort of programs I would see on the resume of an 19 year old sophomore in college applying for an engineering internship. Not all...but a decent chunk.

Of course, there's always favoritism. Every once in a while a Director or VP has a kid who needs an internship and they get in. Most often though, they are actually a pretty smart kid.

My two oldest are 5...so I've got a way to go til I get to this point.

My oldest just turned five last month. Trying to plan ahead, though. Hopefully we'll eventually settle in an area with programs like what you have mentioned. Awesome stuff.

Had to get the daily dig in huh? My car was never intended to be a daily driver.You think just because I'm changing out stuff on a perfectly running car currently that it's now somehow unreliable?
How does that compare with the "write a check and show off a car" mentality that you obviously endorse? The fact that a lot of guys buy the car as a driver, and still show up at the cruise-in's and shows doesn't take away from the fact that they did it for that very reason every Saturday night.

Here's a clue for you....I don't have to pay 600+ a month to have it sit unreliably while I change it up.

Anybody who wants to buy a new car, and can afford it, good on them. If that's what you want,...more power to you.

I just thought this was a fox forum....For whatever reason people choose to buy, build, and maintain a car that needs an Indian rain Dance to get it out of the driveway....seems to go with the territory. Clearly fox owners need a certain connection to American Indians in order to even consider owning one of these cars....

For the mindless zombies however, They do have an S 197, and a S 550 dedicated forum....

Strange that you never see one of those guys down here, but you always see one of us wanting to be up there

Right, and a low mile, unmolested Fox isn't the Holy Grail around here. Just another soulless automobile that someone had the cash to hand over.

Talk to me when you get the machine guns mounted. I don't think Ford has a plan for those just yet and that might completely change my mind about whether or not there is any value to having a new(ish) car.

I'm in here!! Although I don't comment much, I enjoy watching all the build threads, and seeing what all of you truly talented people can do. While I can follow directions and put new clutches in a trac-loc rear end or change a heater core, I dont have the skills or patience to custom fab a turbo kit, or build - wire - program a custom ecu so everything will run!

I never ever thought I'd buy a brand new car. After some life changes I won't bore you with, and some encouragement from people close to me that it's ok to do something nice for myself, I bought a brand new car (for 0% financing ) While I'm not thrilled with a payment every month, I have no regrets.

I planned on keeping both the cars, and even got a historical plate for the fox. After having the s550 for a few months, I got no joy from driving the fox. It didn't accelerate as well, didn't shift as well, didnt ride as well, radio not as good, all that wind noise from the aftermarket sunroof, etc..... I ended up selling it last fall because I knew how little I would end up driving it, and every time I got in it would have a different problem pop up. (As 25+ year old cars do... )

That said, I still think foxes are great! I just wasn't prepared to sink the kind of money into mine to make it preform like a new car, still to have a wrapped fox with bad paint under that, and god knows how much hidden rust under that .

But, it's like you said.. To each their own. I'll be in the line up at the car shows in my cookie cutter s550. With a big smile on my face.

I never felt my fox was nice enough to show off, so I would never take it to car shows. If I was going to a car show, I wouldn't put it in the show, I'd park in the lot....

Usually, when it comes to my DD's, I take the approach that once my repair costs and time spent repairing the car exceed what a monthly payment would be, it's time to get a new car. Usually I pull some financial wizardry to get myself as low of a payment as possible and usually drive the car beyond being paid off. But I've come to the realization that I HATE working on cars other than a Mustang. I get no joy in it. Doing a brake job on the DD = hate. Rebuilding a T-5? Love it!

So with that in mind, there comes a point where if I'm sacrificing my 1 or 2 free Sunday AM's a month to fix shocks, or chase done some electrical demon rather than hanging with the kids or out golfing, then I need to evaluate my vehicle situation.

My Last vehicle, an Infiniti G35x, was purchased 1 year old and I drove it 10 years and nearly 180K miles. Towards the end, it was nickel and diming me. $50 here, $100 there. 4 hours in the garage on a beautiful Sunday AM tackling a wheel bearing. I should have gotten rid of that car well before the driveshaft fell out on my at 80MPH. But, I was proud of that "I don't have a payment mentality on a car. I'm actually a pretty cheap bastard when it comes to spending money on things other than the Mustang. I watch TV on a 15-year old 50" plasma. Buying a new TV just seems like a waste of $$$

Of course, after getting my new Taurus, I did some math.

The paid off car cost me roughly $200/month in repairs (control arms, wheel bearings, shocks, rusting exhaust, etc) , 2-4 hours of my time, and drank almost $400 in 91+ octane a month (it was a gas guzzler for a v6). My new Taurus has a $200/mo payment, and gets almost 30MPG highway and takes 87 octane so my fuel bill is around $200/mo now. So while I have a payment, my vehicle costs have dropped...and the best part is the car sits in the driveway and doesn't need me to fix a thing. I spend that "repair" time taking the Mustang for a drive to get a coffee.

My wife has a '17 vehicle, and it's the same mentality. I don't want to waste a second fixing It, but at the same time I want a car that starts up and goes when she needs it. If that costs me a payment each month..so be it. Just means I can actually spend time in the garage messing with my Fox.

Of course, I need a certain 3-month old baby to start sleeping more than 30 mins at a time. More reason why I have no time to fix cars.

not going to lie... id love to have a black '18 Gt or a cruiser for the street. not selling the fox to get one though. the fox just feels like a bad mofo when you are driving it even if it is slow. back when my LX was stock it felt faster than my buddies CTSV on the bottle.

or i'll say it when the LX is done sell the roller and buy a factory 5 coupe and put a 1khp windsor in it with a powerglide.

but damn it i need a weekend toy!!!!!

This is how it is for me:

There are those here that either can't, won't, or don't, fix or maintain their 40 year old car here. When it breaks, or something wears out or fails, it somehow gets labeled unreliable.

Anybody who buys a 85 Mustang that hadn't been restored is kidding themselves if they think they aren't stepping off into a giant money pit.
Things aren't gonna work, it's gonna rattle, and squeak. Wind noise will be rampant, and it's gonna ride and perform like ass.

Here's the cool part.....

Every freaking thing on one of these cars is replaceable. Excepting the plastic panels, The entire interior is as well.

The cars rattles because screws are loose/ missing/and/or the mount hole is broken.
The door hinges are shot, and the striker bushing is long gone. Wind noise is directly related to the replaceable door gasket, and window run channels,
It rides like ass because the suspension is shot, and because the car doesn't weigh 3900 pounds like its portly later model cousin does.
It runs bad because the drivetrain has been subjected to years of abuse and neglect.
It's unreliable because the electronics are as old or ( more likely) older than the driver of the car.

And people here are btching that the car is always a problem one way or the other.

I wonder why?

Here's a thought.....buy the car EXPECTING that all of that old junk needs replacing. You replace the harness with new aftermarket unit, the engine, transmission, and rear get rebuilt. You replace the worn out suspension with new stuff. You replace the worn out guides, pins, and bushings on your worn out saggy ass doors.
Then you get on you tube, and using it as a guide, rebuild your broken seats, and replace the springs and foam, finally recover the whole thing with brand new upholstery in the color, and fabric of your choice.

Then.....wallow around in the pompous knowledge that this better than new, faster than new, just as tight as new, and as quiet as new car came directly as a result of your sweat equity,....and the ride, and visceral 60's era muscle car experience is only comparable to riding in another equally refurbished and equipped fox mustang.

Then the next day when you go out to the garage and turn that key, the car starts, and you get to do it all over again.

Rebuilding this old worn out Mustang into a reliable driver that is fun to drive is what its all about. I look forward to making it better, I love going out to my garage on Saturday mornings and turning wrenches on it. Its a very rewarding hobby. Like Michael said, it is a money pit though. I feel lucky that the things that are (wrong/worn out) with my car aren't major. I don't see myself spending 10k+ plus on a new 400 horsepower engine. I'm just taking care of the engine that's in there and enjoying it. I can detrim, do the bodywork, and prep on the car myself. I've got friends that are professional painters that will paint it for me, so that wont cost me anything except the materials plus beer/lunch.

There will always be something that needs to be done/changed on it though, its never ending.

Oh and that car looks oddly familiar....thats right I’m one of the 20 somethings that did an internship program, and clean/cleared my engineering EE/ME college. Now I’m an advocate locally to inform rising youths of their options.

Souless? Well mine must of been reincarnated from a bastardized fox, because it gives me more lip than my actual fox(s).

I still DD the fox over the S550

I drive my older cars more than my new car, because although Ford got the drivetrain right. The paint is thin except on a triple coat and the majority have body panel issues. Btw the PP tires suck as well.

If i knew what I know now I would of just Coyote Swapped the fox.

Since you asked..

1969 Mach 1. By 23, I was the second, 4th, and 6th owner of the same car. ( purchased at 17, sold at 21, re purchased at 23) And by the time I had it the 6th time, I had rebuilt it several times....myself.

Not a 40 year old car...but nobody worked on it besides me.
