I had a pretty good day and just felt like sharing...
It was the NHRA National Dragster Challenge day at Woodburn. An invitation only racers race - you had to participate in at least 1 championship event and have signed up for the season points to get an invite. ET Bracket winners in this race receive an NHRA "Wally" trophy in addition to the regular payouts. They also crown the yearly "King of the Track" at this event.
Well, I raced earlier in the year in the Pro Bracket and was signed up for points, so I got an invite. I decided to go at the last minute even though I was suffering with some type of head cold/sinus crud.
I got there a little late and only got a couple of time runs. I'm still trying to figure out how to launch my mildly modded Cobra well and consistently - as that is what it takes to win in bracket racing. You've got to be consistent, run your numbers (dial-in) and get good reaction times. So far with the Cobra I've been all over the place ET and RT wise. It's been a little frustrating.
So I decided to slow down a bit and not try to ring every last ounce of performance out of the car. I'm just going to try to drive it the way I know how, and not worry about the ET quite so much. Especially since I'm just a casual racer who goes to the track 4 or 5 times a year just to have some fun.
Now the folks that run in Pro and Super Pro Brackets are in most cases serious racers who consistently run their numbers and are great on the tree. I thought I'd just get a couple of time runs in and get beat in the first round of eliminations and call it a day.
Well, I didn't win a "Wally", but I did put forth a good showing for myself and my Cobra. The Pro Bracket field was a large one at about 80 cars. I made it thru 4 rounds all the way to the quarter finals. There were only 5 cars left, and I was one of them.
Along the way I took out the Woodburn 2004 Pro Bracket season champ. It was in the 2nd round and I beat him on a holeshot. I had a perfect light (.000) to his (.086). In the 4th round I took out the Woodburn Pro Bracket runner-up with another holeshot (my .006 to his .044).
My day ended when I redlit in the 5th round, but I felt pretty good about how it all turned out.
Anyway, thanks for letting me share this with you.
