I've had a rear out of a granada in my 66 coupe a while now, but the gears are terrible, no tag of course. It is not an 8 or 9 inch cause the cover is in the back with 10 bolts in it. any idea what it is? is it worth doing anything to or should i start looking for an 8"?

Sounds like you have a 7.5" rear Ford used in FOX chassis cars before they switched to the 8.8. It is pure junk. Get rid of it as soon as you can.

Ford used (4) different rear ends in the '75-'80 Granadas/Monarchs:

1. 8-inch small bearing drum brake rear end. --Good for swaps into Mustangs and other related Fords.

2. 8.7" integral style rear end (cover on back of housing) with drum brakes. Not a good rear end for performance.

3. 9-inch small bearing drum brake rear end. Good rear end basis for performance swap in Mustangs & related Fords.

4. 9-inch large bearing disc brake rear end (same rear end as Lincoln Versailles). Robust-built housing, but brake parts are heavy as well as expensive to replace.

In the 9-inch rear ends installed in Granadas & Monarchs, there were only four possible ratios installed from the factory;

1. 2.47:1

2. 2.50:1

3. 2.75:1

4. 3.00:1

Some of the 9-inch rears had 2-pinion Traction-Lok differentials and some had the stronger 4-pinion Tration-Lok differentials, but most had open (single track) differentials.

Awesome info, ultrastang. I also have a mystery rear end in my 68 coupe. Can anyone tell me where I should look for a possible tag?

Can you post a picture of your car's rear end? If the I.D. tag is still on the rear end, it should be on one or the (10) studs that holds the 3rd member to the housing --assuming it either an 8- or 9-inch rear end.

Thanks, ultrastang. I'll go out and look now for an ID tag. If I don't find one, I will try to take a pic. If I have to post a pic, though, it will probably be a few days before I get the chance to do it. Hopefully, I won't need to. Thanks again!
