How does the 4.6 DOHC Motor Hold to Blowers, That will be My first Mod, And is there any differences between the the motors of the 96-98's? Im looking for a Adult Owned low mileage Cobra, I like the 94-95's But they are going for to much, the 96-98 just seems like a smart Buy, I just worried about how it will hold up with 8lbs of boost with stock lower end. Any feedback would helpm thanks.

You’re posting this in a 4.6 forum  its going to be kind of one sided. All cobras are great cars and they all have very strong motors. But it is cheaper to mod a 5.0 compared to a 4.6 and that is just a fact. You have to look at the over all picture. A blower will make any car move but as far as upgrading everything else the 4.6s are very $$$. But if all you plan on doing is a blower and that’s it than the 96-98 Cobra would be the right choice. Good luck with your decision :nice:

I'm gonna take a different road here and say get a 94 or 95 IF you plan to do crazy things to it. What I would do is get a 95 if possible, put all Cobra R pieces on it, paint it white, drop in a forged 351 windsor with deep dish pistons (you could stroke it) and put either a supercharger on it, nitrous, or a turbo. Personally I think that would be more fun than a 4v.

Ive heard that the stock block can hold upwards of 12psi on the 96-98 Cobras, but thats on borrowed time. With 8psi, you'll have no problem. The weak link will probably be the connecting rods. The 4 bolt main will hold up, no problem with crankwalk.

Just defending the 5.0 Cobra guys.... my car is not just like any other 5.0 GT... i feel that a hand built motor, wether it be pushrod power or modular muscle is a few steps above the 5.0's in GTs... and i wouldnt compare the two saying they are the same. Ive beat every 2v stang ive come across, taht didnt have a major power adder. Ive never raced a 4v to say how i would do so i cant defend myself on that end. However LT1's are easy too, so that gives you an idea of how quick a 5.0 cobra with just exhaust is... and that was before the gears. That being said, i wouldnt pass up a 4.6 cobra for a good price just because it was a modular motor, thats lame. I just always wanted a 5.0. :flag:

If the 94-95's didn't cost jsut as much as a mint-condition 98, I'd actually be the guy to suggest them. Easy to mod, cheaper to mod, bigger aftermarket, and already have good H/C...

But I'll have to suggest a 98 Cobra, with a nice blower on it and some gears (it revs to 7,000 anyways ;))

Sorry 94-95 guys, but this is a no-brainer. One of my good friends at work has a Rio Red 95, and he regrets not going with a modular for good reason. The car has a significant number of bolt ons. Mac LT headers, Prochamber, Dynomax catback, MSD 6AL, C&L 77mm MAF, BBK CAI, MAC underdrive pulleys, bumped timing, K&N, 3.73 gears, and Nitto DRs

Despite throwing that kind of cash and time at the car, he is running about 14.0-14.1 and trapping in the high 90s. Say what you want about the traction, but the trap speeds don't lie. He's put a lot of time and effort into his car, and he is still making only ~240-250 rwhp. My near-stock 98 beats that by ~15-25 rwhp with only pulleys and a MAF/CAI combo.

The 94-95 cars are heavy and run out of breath at higher RPMs. My buddy will need ported heads and more cam if he really wants to get the car moving.

I will give my opinion on this because I was in the same decision over a year ago. The things that turned me away from the 94-95 was the price. I can't believe what people want for these cars. I saw ones with 120k miles going for as much as my 96 with 65K was. Performance wise both of them are pretty slow stock, but the 94-95 seems like a dog. Yes you can put new heads and a cam in the 5.0 for around a little over a grand and make some good power. I had already done this before with other 5.0s and I did not want to build up another one, been there done that type of thing and wanted to try something new with the 4.6

I raced a 95 cobra with 3.73,cold air,x-pipe,flowmaster catback, and a pro-m mass air.
I gave him the brake and still got him by three. this car was driven by a pretty good driver and he knows 5.0. I just think that if it was me I would go with a 96-98 because the respond to mods a lot better also.

Ok I see the point of a cobra is hand built and a gt isn't but it still is a 5.0. I'm not knocking the 5.0s at all. Those motors are really easy to get serious with. I would have got a 5.0 but i went with the 4.6 because everyone has a 5.0 at the time. At first i hated the 4.6 because it had nothing out in the market but now i'm glad i stayed with it. The market and prices aren't to bad a the 4.6 now.

O yea automotive if you want a real car the way to go is a LS1 baby. THE LS1 CAN NEVER LOSE!!!!!! :D

Just go test drive both. But i'm sure you'll like the 4v more because it has more power stock and after 4k its so fun.
