Need replacement automatic transmission!

I have a 1988 Mustang GT with an automatic transmission. I have been wondering if I should have my transmission overhauled or just buy a new automatic transmission. The GT is just a cruiser, but I still want it to handle well on the highway. I currently has 4.10 ring and pinion gears with minor mods on the engine. They consist of Cobra intake, 70 mm BBK throttle body and 73 mm mass air meter. My future upgrades might include AFR 165 cc heads and maybe an E-303 camshaft. Any suggestions on which route I should take? If a new tranny, which brand of tranny should I consider?

What is wrong with the current transmission? If it's completely gone, maybe it would be best to just replace it. If it just needs to be gone through, I would rebuild it and have a mild shift kit installed.

The tranny still works but seems to shift hard when shifting gears. I want to install a shift kit and a 3000 stall torque converter.

In that case, I think a rebuild is the way to go. That combo should make good performance and street manners.
