new '68 Fastback GT owner; vin location ?'s

Long time member here, first time classic Mustang owner.

It's a '68 Fastback GT (duh), Candy Apple Red w/ black interior and black C-stripe (the Marti report states it's supposed to be Highland Green D), with a Nugget Gold interior), 302 4V, C4, 3.25s, PS, console, AM radio, and louvered hood.

My first question is on vin stampings/vin plates. I see the vin number stamped on the left fender apron. I see no dash vin plate; did they even come with one? And the door plate is missing; the holes are still there. I do see an aluminum vin tag on the pass. side of the radiator support; is that correct?

Any help is much appreciated.

Oh boy. The 68 must have an aluminum VIN tag riveted to the RH side of the dash, way down by the bottom RH corner of the windshield. It may be under the pad. There are also one or two hidden VINs on the top of the front fender aprons, but the dash VIN is the one authorities should be looking for.

The door plate means nothing, that was just warranty info for the dealer.

it appears to be a re-pop pad, it might be under there? there is no cut out for a vin plate in the pad. the fender apron, that aluminum tag, and title all match.

I have a 68 FB and my only vin number i've found is on my driverside door, the original owner put 67 front fenders on it and when i got it the dash was soo rusted out from hte huge hole in the windshield on the passengerside i had to rebuild it. I bought the car off a California Highway Patrol Officer so it shouldn't be a stolen vehicle.

You mean this tag, that says "Not for title or registration"? You should find two VINs hidden under the top edge of the fenders on the fender aprons (not on the fenders) . The legit VIN on a 68 is an aluminum tag on top of the RH side of the dash pad.

I just went out and checked and mine is different than your picture but i can barely read where it says not for title or registration. I thought that was my vin tag, the dash on the passengerside was completely gone so there was no aluminum tag there. I'll have to check the fender aprons, i replaced them with aluminum panels.

So i was digging for some parts i am missing to put the arm rests on my driverside door and i was looking in the bag of parts that were in the trunk when i bought the vehicle and i found 2 aluminum tags that look like they would be a vin. I'll have to match them to the fender apron behind my garage and see. Couldn't really read them that well.

sure enough, i removed in the dash windshield trim, peeled the pad back, and there was the vin. thanks!
