I can see smog shops like some now smog only plugin cars, not the sniffer/dyno required cars.

You want to get rid of classic cars 76+ charge crazy price for smog checks on those models if you can find them or smog shops no longer have the dynos to smog them. Most of the smog shops only smog plug ins, no dyno. That means you can't register these cars.

Now this tire thing is another crazy...

You guys really need to find better news sources. This is click bait. While these and other states are trying to pass legislation for tighter restrictions on older cars, they are not secretly banning older cars. If they were "secretly" banning older cars, how would countless posts on social media and videos on YouTube be able to share this "secret"?

She lists Massachusetts as one of the states, but I don't see it.

MA has a rolling 15 year exemption on emissions. Anything older than 15 years just doesn't get it...even the plug in OBD2 cars. As for costs to register and such, the older the vehicle, the cheaper it is generally. My '88 and '00 are MUCH cheaper to register and pay annual excise taxes on than my new stuff. I have a vanity plate on my '88, so it's a little more expensive, but all in with regards to gov't fees (registration, excise, inspection) i'm in for $135/annually on that car. My '23 Explorer ran me just under $1K in the same gov't mandated cost...mostly excise.

I don't see anything in the pipeline from MA either. I'm in a few local groups where this stuff gets spotted pretty quick when someone tries to pass a new restriction. So far they haven't paid much attention to the handful of older cars that drive on the roads 3 months a year here.

You know what forces people out of older cars in MA? Rust from all the damn salt in the road. Seeing something older than 15 years driving around as an every day car around here is rare because most vehicles start rusting out around 150K miles

CA is just a whole different level of suck with regards to vehicles. Ironically I am about to hop on a plane to CA

My 82 cost $150 to register and goes up every year base on value with a biennial smog check.

Ya i'm like $188 (if i recall) for my 1990 with a custom plate. I believe the plate itself is $40/year.

Would be nice to not have to SMOG it though.

I pay $20 for yearly tags with no smog.

Remember when people said coal fired power plants were dying or dead?
You just never know and I assure you these Boobtubers DON'T.

That Leno Law is a joke! My brother 65 GMC 1500 cost $165 and of course pickups have commercial tags.

You may think it's a joke but at least he's making an effort. Instead of sitting on his laurels and whining, he put his thoughts to paper and submitted it as a bill. If more people made their voices heard, we'd have power in numbers. I belong to two organizations that are fighting to keep classic cars on the road. So far, the other side has been listening and taking notice.

Write a letter to your senator and make your voice heard.

My senator is a Democrat and most of the state is majority. I voted (R). Initially the Leno Law was good until it was altered. Car cannot be used as primary, 1000 miles a year, parades and special events only, classic insurance only. Now pre 76 no requirements what so ever, no smog, drive as much as you want, no special insurance.

That's better than no hot rods at all, no?
Many classic car insurance companies limit mileage and usage as well. It's not just the state of California. Most bills shoot high but must take concessions to be passed. If Leno's Law makes any difference for the better; it's a win. A precident has now been set. Baby steps.

I enjoy driving my 82 put at least 2000+ a year, and it's my primary transportation. I can understand if you want a trailer queen and drag it to events so as not to put miles on it. I guess I could just buy a pre-76 and live with that. Lot cheaper than buy a late model Mustang. Or move to another county or state that doesn't require smog on any model. California does have no smog counties.

I have written letters to both Senators and the Congressmen in my State. Multiple times.
Every single time I get a Form letter in reply that does not address the questions or comments I have.
Not even close.
It is a waste of time to write to the representatives in this State. In reality, they don't "represent" anyone at all, just their own interests.

As far as not being allowed to register a vehicle, it is not going to stop me from driving it.
They don't give a about the public, I certainly don't give a about any "laws" they pass.

I walk my block and I count 10 vehicles with expired tags. I see them everywhere I'm out on the road. I ask a mechanic I know and see the same.

Same here. You don't get pulled over for an expired tag, it is a secondary offense.
Plus the fine is usually about half what it cost to register the vehicle anyway.
This area is rural enough, that the only enforcement is from the Sheriffs Dept as none of these small towns have their own Police Dept.
Gotta go the the BIG city (population 28K) to see an actual city Police car.
I still carry Insurance on all of my vehicles. The Super Duty and the 24' Enclosed trailer have not be registered for over 2 years now. My DD is registered though.
Hell, the town I live in want you to license your pets, but they don't actually have anyone in the town office that has any duties regarding pets being licensed,. As a result, I have never licensed a pet either. Just another fee (Tax) that serves no purpose other than to fill the town coffers.

This is where power in numbers may help. Get car clubs involved. We have booths at car shows and racing events to educate hobbyists. Never give up. If you do, you become part of the problem.

The NRA has survived so long due to membership action. There are many, many folks who oppose guns including members of Congress. The moment we stop fighting, we'll lose the battle.

Yes, I'm preaching. Lol

And light them up on their individual social media pages. You need a good argument and as always, pictures help.

Start with an image of your pristine Mustang. Make your case. Show receipts.

Hopefully you gain support from the other car nuts.
