Just call me a dumbazz, what is a breakout box?
I can guess it's not that thing that guy was wearing on his head when he had his finger stuck to that air compressor.

I'd buy that but I would have to build a shelf just to store it.
I like the box that the 'air compressor' guy was wearing better.
I have to ask, did he wear that while driving slow and waving at poor people that envied him?

Maybe it's just because of the great resources here, but code tracing hasn't really been a problem for me. Yeah, it may just be a simple "Right bank lean" or "ECT out of range" or something like that and not tell you WHY it's reading that way and actually makes you troubleshoot a bit, but 9x out of 10 for me it's been a mechanical issue (usually something not hooked up right after fiddling with something else nearby) rather than a just bad sensor. Maybe that only gives it the slightest edge of finding where a problem is over a carb, but it's still an edge.

To me, the biggest problem with the factory 80's/90's efi is a new(er) problem: the lackluster quality of modern aftermarket parts (tfi and other distributor parts especially) and the unavailbility of OE parts. Again, another industry wide problem that affects anything old enough to not have OE support regardless of what type of fueling it uses, and regardless of if said part is electrical or mechanical in nature.

And I've seen a few guys in here with aftermarket efi that praise the carb glory days, and most seem to be running megasquirt and it makes me want to ask "Why?" Sure it's cheap, you can build it 100% on your own, or just buy a plug-n-play (which, other than the datalogging capability and laptop tuning is actually a bit of step backwards since anything before ms3 can't do sequential fueling), but from what I've seen, by it's nearly open-source nature, the support and feature implementation is just not there like it is for systems like Holley, BS3, Fast and even the basic TBI systems like Fitech (whole 'nother can-o-worms there). And I know the MS stuff is probably more popular for the kind of crowd we have here than any of those, but I also see way more unfinished MS systems that end up going to a back to a carb or a modded factory efi (or just plain giving up and selling the whole project) than I see of if happening with the "big names"
It's simple. if your an idiot don't try the megasquirt system. if you can't learn dont buy it. YOU are responsible for the results period. I taught myself everything about efi from my MS system, if your not willing to put forth any effort find something else.

Ok this post sounded harsh but it's true

Results=effort

Im really on the fence whether I'll be going back with holley EFI again or trying MS3 pro this go around. Its impossible to get an unbiased answer comparing the two so I may flip a coin

Just from my random searching/reading/etc I'd go with Holley. #1 reason for you is that you already have experience with the system. #2 reason is the support from the manufacturer. Ive seen more negative comments with MS but also believe in some cases it's more "operator error" than product defect. And the LS-Holley system combo is almost as popular as peanut butter/jelly these days. EVERYBODY is doing it. If you can't find support...you're doing it wrong

I'll address this directly. Since I'm am one of the poster children for the "operator error" w/ regard to any MS product.

I built my kit. An MS3 isn't available as a kit. it comes pre-assembled. A complete standalone kit costs 1199.00. Holley's kit is 500-700 more than that.

I built mine, and although I was "frustrated" at how hard it is/was to get a simple answer to a question ( you have to email them, they answer as simply as possible, it takes multiple back-and-forths sometimes spanning days to get an an answer)
The fact of the matter is once that is behind you (two days of bumping your head) the car starts.

And you still have 500-700 left to pay the guy that's gonna put your junk on a dyno.

Even at my last OMG, where I was quick to blame the ECU,...it turned out to likely be a loose, or poor connection.........at the fuel pump.

So,..in keeping with the theme of the thread...you cannot be an idiot when you decide to go down the path of adding an aftermarket stand alone ECU,....none of them are "idiot proof", and it does take a certain understanding of computers and electronics to install/tune. What would be "idiotic" however, is having a decent skill set and still throwing 500-700 dollars away, just for the "peace of mind" that there will be a quick answer waiting for you at the other end of a phone.

Since you guessed,.....you are correct. In order to be called scotch it HAS to come from Scotland. Characteristically it is way too smoky and dirty tasting (as in literally) for me.

I prefer bourbon. It more closely matches my sweet nature.

Holley likes to make you wait on hold for 3 hours to then tell you it's your fault it's not working. And both times I called them that was correct

I have never used the Holley system but I have to know dozens of cars with the mega squirt most of which I tuned myself. The wonderful thing about the more expensive systems as customer support over the phone help. Megasquirt has many many forms with members that are willing to help others. I started using megasquirt because I'm cheap
