Paint Question

I'm prepping my 64.5 for paint (again) and I've sanded off the poor bc/cc job I did a couple of years back. I was looking at TCP and I noticed that their prices for their store brand paint is less than 1/2 the price of PPG.

TCP Global - Quality & Service Since 1974

Question... Has anyone on this forum used TCP? What's the consensus? Durability? Sprayability?

I would imagine that it's not of the same quality as PPG. But, for the price it seems worth my consideration.

I would use SPI www.southernpolyurethanes.com for all primers and clear.

I have used there primers and they spray nice and seem to sand well without alot of clogging. As for the paint Im not sure but I did just order there HotRod Flats line in a dark blue for a side project so we will see how that stuff works soon. I personally think most base coats all spray and look the same in reality, the clear is where you should spend your money.

I have used TCP Global for chassis black and blacks as that.

Last week I got a DeVilbiss gun from TCP which was dripping at the nozzle. I called them and had to put up a tiny fuss to get them to take it back and send me another gun. The gun was bad out of the box. They acted like they were doing me a favor sending me another gun shipped on their dime. I had to pay return shipping which is BS.

Be careful with TCP Global that is crap customer service as I see it.

Have you looked at Omni? It's made by PPG and sells at about half the price. Should even be available at the same store that sold you the PPG.

Rusty, I've looked at Southern Urethanes and their prices look very good. Is there paint durable? I would guess it is as it looks like you have some experience with it.

Sparx, I followed up on your comment on TCP customer service and, yes, I found numerous complaints about poor customer service.

Has anyone used Eastwood paints? They sell a single stage urethane that can also be clear coated, if desired. The prices are also pretty good and I've dealt with them before.

I used Eastwood black chassis also and they are a solid Company to deal with.

I have recently had conversations with SPI and they are very helpful. I have talked with Barry of SPI about how to handle rust, and he was very helpful.

I am considering using their prime and clear also but there is no vendor in Tucson. The closest seller of SPI is in Scottsdale, regarding my situation.

I have used Nason in the past with very good results, but this time I will be using top of the line PPG or Dupont color, not sure I want a different brand of clear on top of it.

I can't imagine Dupont or PPG being inferior to SPI.

And this was Eastwood paints?

This is the Fiero I redid about 1.5 years ago. My first bc/cc paint job, used Nason. I had painted 30 years ago with 1 step lacquer before this. New system is much easier, but more deadly chemicals preside of course.

go to your local ppg distributor and tell them your deal. they offer other PPG lines that are considerably more cost effective. in many cases they may recommend one of the economy lines over the top shelf paints.

No matter what base paint you decide on use SPI primers and clear. That is all I have used in my shop since 2005.

What about filler primer, ok to use PPG or Dupont 2K?
I was told by SPI the epoxy primer can be reduced and used as a sealer so that is taken care of.

I have never used either one I was using RM products until I found SPI and I won't use another brand primer or clear. You can not beat their quality or service. Barry the owner gives you his personal cell number to call if you have questions 7 days a week. Who do you call at PPG or Dupont if you have a question?

Thanks everyone. I think I will either try the SPI or the Eastwood paint. The SPI prices look pretty good and now that I see some recommendations, it sounds like a good alternative. Also, I've dealt with Eastwood before and they are a reputable company.

I'm almost done with the body work (just a couple of minor dings) and I hope to shoot some primer once we get a mild day. I've got some time to order the paint, but either SPI or Eastwood.

Another vote for SPI epoxy primer. I contacted Barry and he put me in touch with a shop in South Jersey to purchase it. The owner of the shop was very helpful; their website is Xtreme Kreations / custom paint / airbrushing / sport bikes / motorcycles / Hotrods / Helmets /Graphics. This primer is tough as nails and sprays really nicely. Time constraints haven't allowed me to make any more progress so I can't tell you how the clear I bought is...
