Picked up my 460 tonight

Didnt you say its back from the machine shop already???

You should have all your rotating assy with it before it got machined... the bores need to be done to fit the pistons (the actual set mic'd and b/h accordingly, etc...) and so on, and so on....

I would also think that total power output would be a factor in the work on the bottom end and oil system. If it was "done" with mild 400s in mind (ala: stock 460) then turning it into a fire breathing 514/540/whatever, might not be wise.

Just .02 from the cheap seats.

The block has been lined bored honed 30 over and the crank has been machined, along with the block being tanked and checked for cracks. The heads have been checked and one of the seats has a crack in it. I cant remember what excatly has been done to it but a buddy on here does! Basically it's ready to go all ya need is a cam the seats in the heads done and the accoreies and a carb, and the rods have been checked and are fine as well as reassembled. peace

iron heads, big cam, single 4 barrel, c-4, 3.55 gears 28/10 slick
10.25 to be exact! at 3000 lbs . hard to go 2500 with bigblock.
you could build a low 11 high ten car that would run on pump gas easy.

this is what i was expecting also! but then after a little reserch and figuring i think it would be more of a hasel to swap it out every 2 years to get threw emisions? I could hit those times with a 302 you'd think? Or atleast with a 351 or if i dont sell it i'll hang on to it till i get a non emisions car? peace

A 460 (imho) will make the same power with a milder tune and there-for be EASIER to pass smog. IE: A 302 or 347, 393 whatever will need more cam, header, carb, etc... to reach a given power level than a 460 will, so it will have a harder time passing the sniffer test.

Heck a stock 460 can make 350hp and 450lb/ft all day long... try that with your stock 302.

All things in perspective....

you don't need smog legal stuff to pass the sniffer, just look at me

Exactly. Just build the car and worry about smog when the time comes. There are people that have passed with no cats, EGR, smog pump, etc. My truck has no smog pump or EGR, but does have two hi-flow magnaflow cats. It should pass easily. You have many options to alter emissions. Take it to DEQ, get a baseline, then start playing with carb settings and fuels. You should not have too much trouble. The big block fox must live!

Exactly. The 347 I might build should make about 550hp at the crank with 11:1 compression on premium pump gas. To get into the 10's, I am going to have to spray a 150 shot. At this point, the car will be high 10's on slicks. John's fox with a mild 460, auto tranny, slicks and suspension would beat me on pump gas.

Building a engine to make some power and pass smog is easy, but they are right about cube's though. A good target is 1 horse per cube. A 302/347 would be 302/347 horse, when a 460 would be 460hp. You get the idea? Anybody ever take a BB fox through smog though???

I hate hippies, Uninformed and outspoken

I think I am going to start teaching a class called "Thermodynamics for Hippies" so they can figure out that their stupid electric cars (that they think is a goverment conspiricy) worse for the enviroment then my truck that get's 9 MPG.
