Hey everyone so I have a 2004 Mach 1 with just under 100k miles. Just recently my car started to make a crazy whinnying/grinding nose while im driving. It doesnt happen at neutral and it doesn’t happen when im revving. It happen in 2-5 once I hit about 3k rpm and will keep making this noice until i either pop it in neutral or let the rpms drop below 3k. Doesnt matter if the car is cold or warm, not that im ripping it when its cold. Im already planning in dropping the tranny this sunday and replacing the clutch and flywheel ect. But i cant figure out what this noice is that way i could buy the part and fix it while its down

That question is loaded. It's like asking what this smell is. However, does it vibrate when it "whines"? Does it do it while on accel or decel or both? Does it do it when loading the car left/right? Just by the description, I'd be checking driveline u-joints and you'll be there on Sunday.

No doesnt seem to vibrate, mainly happens on accel but if im wot it will happen when I lift tell the rpms drop below 2700. It doesn’t matter if im loading the car left or right either. I know its vague, but i’ve never heard this sound before and can’t seem to find anyone or any forum that can tell me what it is so honestly I don’t even know where to start.

Throwout bearing if its the bearing style and not the bushing.

Thank you, thats getting replaced as well with the clutch, flywheel, clutch fork and cable and pilot bearing. I wanted to make sure i have all I need before I drop this tranny.

Are you sure it's under the car? Have you pinpointed an area yet?

I had a whine on my 4.6L that ended up being a bad bearing in the alternator. Whined like a supercharger

My bet is U-joints then, or, it could be as bad as the pinion bearing. However, U-joints are easy and you'll have the driveline out. Depending on miles, I'd replace them anyway. I hope you have a puller to get the pilot bearing out, they are a bugger without one.

I know there is a video around here of them pulling a pilot bearing with a piece of bread.

OMG! Yeah, I've seen one too, gimmick. Try grease too, it'll make just as big a mess. I've had to cut some out in the past, they are a bugger, but hey, whatever you have time for.

I am thinking bearing also. Maybe some form of carrier bearing.
