Check out this link to Baumann Electronic Controls for a history and info on Ford automatic trannys, including the AOD, AODE, and 4R70W. I've been very happy with my beefed up 4R70W. But the 4R70W is a BIG transmission, significantly larger than a C-6, and it takes some fabrication work to make it fit in the early Mustangs.
I checked out the 2nd Salvage yard AOD. I think it has a bad pump. I put 7-8 quarts in it and the dipsick still shows the same level after starting it up and running it throught the gears. No action in any forward gears or reverse.
Since I have to pull it out again, I'm just going to have the trans shop rebuild it. I'm still better off having this one rebuilt than the last one. I want to put it in and have it stay in there for a while. Removing it is one thing, but it's a lot of effort getting that thing back in there with the car up on jack stands and laying on your back.
