A buddy and I are getting a 4cyl conversion started on his car and I'm researching engine components. We will be setting it up with Fuel Injection and he'd like it to pass emission in MA..I was thinking smog legal AFR185's would help on the emissions side, but can they flow enough if we make it a turbo car and look for mid 500's at the wheels?

not sure exactly what the motor will end up as, but I'm not sure as to the limits of 185's

Any help?

They will probably work alright since you need to pass smog, but a set of 205's would definately be a better choice for optimal power on that set up. I don't think you will have any issues seeing mid 500's however with the help of turbo.

Don't build a motor just to pass smog. build it like u want and just buy a sticker. We do it all the time in cali.

Look at the TFS Hi-port 225cnc'd head, AFR 225 or TFS-R 225 cnc'd head. TFS-R 351 intake or Victor 5.8 EFI or CHP Spyder intake, custom cam, 2" primary LT ceramic coated in and out headers w 3 1/2" collectors.

Here's one bad ass 408 stroker for sale. http://www.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?t=870140

that is getting harder and harder to do, plus, why depend on that forever, when the car will be around for the foreseeable future?

What's wrong with building an emissions legal motor? so i'll only make 510hp when 550 was attainable? my car had all of the emissions gear removed and my motor is so far off from passing that it's rediculous. my buddy doesn't want to dela with that.

how much do the 185's flow? - Depends on who did the porting. Most would advice you to go 205+ on those cubes.

Tom, we have not purchased heads head, just doing research. i guess what it really comes down to, is would it be possible to pass emissions with 205's (considering they don't have an EGR) if we have all other emissions gear (cats, smog pump, etc).

I don't want to build a wicked motor and choke it down with the wrong heads, but we want everything possible out of it and still being able to pass smog.

Well with a turbo, you will still be able to push tons of air through those 185's. You'll make lots of power, no doubt about it, but you'll also be leaving alot on the table...

hmmm - if emissions are required, you might want to go with the 185s unless you can rig up an external EGR system. The turbo will make your power if you turn the boost up........
