I wanted to see what everyone else thought about the situation surrounding the Pittsburg Penguins and the 45 year old Melon Arena? I'd like to see them stay where they are - but with so little progress being made I see them moiving to the midwest.

In all seriousness, Winnipeg has a newly built arena, but it only houses something like 15000 people and limited luxury sweets. Small by NHL standards.

I think that then Pens will stay where they are. As the deadline approaches, someone is going to panic and sign on the dotted line.

Honestly I don't see them staying where they are. I haven't kept up on this recently, but didn't the city just pull the potential funding for a new stadium? If the city is backing out it does not look good. The organization needs a good shake up anyway.

P.S. Go Ducks :)

god i hope so but who knows. we have a brand new arena ( www.mtscenter.ca ) with very nice boxes (my company has one that i use) my understanding is they built the arena and left it open for one more upper deck. this has been on and off the news for a year now. who knows though, it would be nice to see another NHL team here again, we could definetly pull in crowds since we pull in 7000- 10 000 for minor league (AHL)

it would be insane to have the pens come here, with crosby, malkin, stall etc. great young team with a good future i think

If the NHL is dying to "expand" the fan base - I wonder why they can't move a team back to Winnipeg or a similar area up north...

Lord knows we don't need another team in Florida! (not that the pen's are planning on moving there)

i heard about las vegas as an option a while back. but fan base is and attendance is slipping in the southern cities right? why would they move another team south? it all boils down to money, not enough big money here

They're not going anywhere. From what I understand, Pittsburgh has been in the top 10 in attendance for several years. There's also another casino in the area that's going to send some arena money Pittsburgh's way. They're just trying to get the best deal they can by making the local politicians bend a little.

According to ESPN, the Penguins have declared an impass in negotiations and will begin looking for a new home.

espn said:
PITTSBURGH -- The Penguins moved a step closer to leaving Pittsburgh, declaring on Monday an impasse in their new arena negotiations with state and local leaders and saying they will actively pursue relocation.

The breakdown in arena talks came only three days after Gov. Ed Rendell said he felt an agreement was close. It also increases the possibility the Penguins will be playing in Kansas City next season.

"We have made a single-minded effort to bring this new arena to a successful conclusion and keep the team in Pittsburgh," owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle said in a letter to Rendell and local government officials. "... Our good-faith efforts have not produced a deal, however, and have only added more anxiety to what we thought at best was a risky proposition for us moving forward."

In the letter, Lemieux and Burkle put the blame for the impasse on government officials, arguing they agreed to pay $120 million over 30 years to help build a $290 million arena and cover construction cost overruns, yet still have not reached a deal.

There is more reading but that should cover the majority of the story for now.
