Q About Gears.

So quick question about gears. I am ignorant about some things, bear with me.
Some seem to have 4.10 as a normal gear ratio, others seem to have upgraded to a 3.73. What is the difference, and what are the advantages to each? Or any other variations? Amyone know what my stock gears would be on a '95 Cobra?

4.10's are a very steep ratio, i definitely wouldn't call it a downgrade from a 3.73

My GT originally came with 3.08's which are relatively tall and I could get some pretty decent first gear speeds....on the highway, my car revved at a pretty low 2200 rpm at good speeds

changing to a shorter gear ratio such as a 3.55 (03 cobra's ran these stock), 3.73, 4.10's, 4.30's will give you a much improved seat of the pants feeling when you shift through the gears, but top end will suffer on the highways and whatnot. I rev a few hundred rpm more at good cruising speeds now with 4.10's

That said, I'm guessing that your model cobra came with 3.23's or 3.08's. A swap to a 3.73 would be a punchy and safe swap if you like to take the car cruising alot on the highways

I agree with Aaron, EXCEPT if you have an automatic. Most folks here would say 3.73 on a stick and 4.10 on an slush box are essentially the same thing - in terms of aggressiveness. Meaning, if you want a noticable, but still very streetable mod, go with 3.73 gears on a t-5, or 4.10 gears for an auto. If you want a little more aggressive mod, then move up a notch in either case.

Gears are a great first or only mod. But if you do any further mods in the future, that can impact what would be the ideal ratio. And it sucks to pay $500 twice.

I like my 3.73's with an automatic, it is a good compromise between performance and somewhat good fuel economy.

Completely depends on your plans. If it's an auto go with 4.10s for sure. If its a stick it depends on your plans. If it's going to stay fairly mild with just bolt-ons or a mild h/c/i then 4.10s are they way to go if you can afford drag radials. If you can't afford DRs then go with 3.73s. That is all going from experience not he said she said. So take it for what it's worth.

With all that being said, if your plans include a power adder in the future you are probably going to want to go with 3.55s or if you are talking gobs of power then 3.27s.

of course it will, but it won't affect it that much if you don't drive the hell out of it all the time

"In town" gas mileage would probably improve because the engine will be asked to do less work.

If you are trying to give your car more performance and make it faster I don't understand how you can be concerned about gas mileage. These are performance cars and thats one of the downsides of modding them. However, even with that said, 4.10s will not make gas mileage bad in and of themselves. It will be based on how your drive it.

Hey man, not everyone is "all or nothing" about performance. I agree that performance cars should perform. However, some guys have to drive them to work and back, and on road trips, and with kids and with some creature comforts. A good balance is what most people are after. If, because I have a Mustang, I'd have to live with "poor" gas mileage, I simply wouldn't have one. Mileage IS a concern, just not much of one.

The car is just a toy for me, so I really don't care about gas mileage. I would like to keep it to 1 tank per 100 miles at least, but other than that, it's a fun toy...

When my odometer was working, I could pull off 18-19mpg city/highway miles. Don't fear the gear. I had 4.10s with my auto and now that it's a t5, I love 'em even more.
