Question about telling which side is bank 1 or bank 2

I have a quick question about telling whether a side of a motor is bank 1 or bank 2. My question applies not only to mustangs, but cars in general. When say for example, the computer shows a code like, o2 sensor failure on bank 1 or 2, which one is which? Is the driver side always like a bank 1, vice versa, is bank 1 the side with the #1 cylinder, or is it something else. I hate to ask it, but my dad wanted to know since he is going to be getting started with his shop and OBD II inspections soon, and didnt really want to ask someone b/c he didn't wanna look dumb. Lol. Thanks!

Bank 1 is the passenger side. Not sure if it's like that in every car, but I'd guess since OBD-2 is pretty much standard across the board, the banks probably are too. And of course bank 1/2 only apply to vehicles with dual exhaust.

Thanks Sgarlic, it's what I was thinking. Do you mean dual exhaust as in two headers or two pipes all the way back? Anyone else know for sure.

I think he means a V configuration (as opposed to a straight/inline motor).

Thats what I was thinking, just wanting to verify. Would be great to know the answer, one because our explorer (was my aunt's when the trouble started) threw a code for a camshaft position sensor for bank 1. That kinda got us wondering if there was a standard as to what bank is what side.

Bank one to me would be the side of the engine that has the #1 cylinder on it. The #1 cylinder is always on the side that has the head furthest to the front of the engine.
