i drilled a bunch of small holes in a line across it then took a chisel, 1 hit and it was out. prob a lil overboard but i didnt want to go wacking around in there and damage anything.

sounds like a good idea to me!
Here is your problem. that little piece is held on with a spring. that spring goes through the arm at one point, and clips around it at the other. If you don't unhook that spring, it's nearly impossible to get that little piece out. It LOOKS like the frame is getting in the way, but it's not, it's that damn spring.
some stick a hacksaw through the hole in the firewall and saw the thing to pieces. I've used the tire iron in my trunk to pry. If you can get up there, unhook the spring and it should come off easy.
Pics are from the link in my sig, a full writeup on it.

man i got that spring off and it still wouldnt fit out. hmmm interesting. this was beginning of last summer though, but im pretty sure i had that spring off cuz it was swinging around.
I've changed out three of these things so far, and only on the last have I managed to extract that thing in one solid piece. Otherwise, I've found it easiest to snap/saw off that little round outcropping on the side of the plastic quadrant - use either a small hacksaw blade or a pair of diagonal cutting pliers. With that thing outta the way, it makes it a whole lot easier; I only managed to get the last one off in one piece by the sheer luck of finding that one and only bizarre orientation of the thing that allows it to slip off, a method which is near impossible to describe with words.

Yep... same here. Never had to break one apart to get it out. Sometimes, you just got to hold your tongue just right to slip off the prawl.

I was intending to break mine off but it came out in one piece. hehe. It promptly went into the trash either way.

Yea that is honestly one fo the most frustrating things I have ever done. The LT's seemed to be easier but its a satisfying moment when it comes off. I did manage to get mine out in one piece, the sucker WOULDN'T break. But it would not come out until I mangled the spring off it. Then I couldn't get the spacer on the peg, washers it was.
i lost one of the lil clips dammit!! i cant find it anywhere lol. i painfully pushed it off with my finger and it flew somewhere haha
