Rebuilding an 8.8

How difficult is it to rebuild an 8.8 traction lock rear end?

I'm looking on Ebay and I can get a used 31 spline traction lock for pretty cheap. I'd like to buy a rebuild kit and do it myself. I like doing things myself and I like what I learn in the process.

I've heard of people "double packing" the clutches. Is it as simple as just buying more clutches and shims and smooshing them in there?

I've rebuilt an engine before and I took the road less travelled. I did a performance build on a Ford 400 (cams, flat tops, heads, headers, intake, etc). So, I have good wrenching ability, but I have yet to rebuilt a rear-end.

Thanks!!

I see...

I don't want to sound harsh or mean but did you even read my post?

That would seem to indicate that I have already looked on ebay and I've determined that I can get a used, rebuildable unit for cheap.

If however, I had been requesting a place to look for a used unit, I would have appreciated the quick response.. :)

I wouldnt be too concerned about rebuilding a rear end if you have built an engine before.

Doing gear/axle work has been described to me like this: Not hard, but time consuming... and installing gears just takes some very percise measurments, and if you know how it works and what goes where you just need to take your time with it.
