rick just out of curiousity....what happens if you dont file fit them?....i was thinking, whats the worst that could happen?Rick 91GT said:With a file to fit ring you "file" the rings to the proper gap using a ring filer or hand file.
Gap the second ring larger, it helps get out the trapped gases and promotes better ring seal up the top ring.
Well they never changed to "gap the top less" now. The gap hasn't really changed for the top ring, even though it takes the most heat. The only change is they want the 2nd ring a little wider so as to vent the gases and help eliminate ring flutter (so a pressurized pocket of air doesn't build up between the two and have nowhere to go).Jason 302 said:It's interesting how gap recommendations have changed. My old man said years ago they always said to gap your top ring wider because it took more heat than the second and therefore expanded more and needed the extra clearance. But when I built my first motor a few years back the directions said to gap your second ring wider, because it would help gases that built up between the two ring escape, and prevent the first ring from wanting to lift off it's land. What's your take on this Rick????![]()

Modular2v said:so on a ring that is file to fit, there will be no gap when put in the cylinder? that is weird
