Runs good, but other problem

Well after 5 years of basically sitting my car is finally running great. I had it tuned last June but it started puking coolant out the overflow on the dyno so it sat again until a couple months ago. I replaced the HG's and no more coolant puke and the car runs and drives great. Put 75 miles on it yesterday so I am pretty confident in it being right. The clutch is on its last leg, but I have the new one waiting for install so no biggie.

There is a lingering problem however and its kind of a big deal. Ever since a little over a year ago when the motor was put together before, the battery would die pretty easy. It was attributed to the fact that the car was never driven and mainly just started repeatedly to test things etc without any drive time so I didn't think a whole lot of it. So before the dyno tune when it was driveable I had the battery recharged and after 1-2 days of not driving it it was totally dead. From there on out I began disconnecting the battery every time the car was turned off. On the dyno it obviously wasnt unhooked every time it was turned off though and by the end of the couple hours it was having a hard time starting.

Well, fast forward a year to now and I have been disconnecting it every time the car is shut off and thus far (5 or so starts per day the last 2 days) it has start every time although it seems to crank slightly slower after a day of starts.

Now I know some peoples cars crank slow normally, but when it is cranking the volts drop way down to the bottom and you can tell its not a powerful start. The whole reason I began disconnecting the battery was because I was under the impression there had to be some sort of a current draw when it sat, which I tried to rule out by disconnecting the battery each time to see if it still had issues. I had the alternator tested two days ago and it tested good plus it is only a few years old and the usage is only equal to prolly a summer or less. Also I drove the car yesterday for probably an hour straight yesterday and had no charging issues at all.

Since the alternator is most likely good and the battery is disconnected right after the car is shut off, why wouldn't it have good power starting up each time?

Also, I have a fan module from the auto parts store that turns the high speed fan on at a certain temp etc. I am wondering if that was perhaps the draw when the car was off?

Sorry for how insanely long this is. Any help is greatly appreciated. :nice:

So new Odyssey battery as of last summer, correct? Has the Odyssey battery drained down?

If it has been discharged/fully drained, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have it tested at one of the local parts stores - just to rule out the battery, ya know ?

G'luck.

I agree with you. There is a chance maybe it was messed up in that process. I'll get it checked. But the car clearly has another issue as well that made it drain from just sitting.

not sure if this is a "proper" way to test but i've done it before and it's worked. when you go to hook the battery up, does it spark when you put the connectors on? that will tell you there is a drain somewhere. Now pull a fuse and retest that. If it doesn't spark then you've found your draw. if not, repeat with another fuse.

Interesting Ryan....i'll have to keep that in mind. What is it about something having a draw that makes it spark?

i could be way off, but last time i was around a car doing the same thing there was a constant draw from the radio. is yours aftermarket? becaue you would not believe how fast one of those can empty a battery.

Also the spart idea may not tell you anything because don't we have a light under the hood? i might be thinking of my old car though.

The easiest way to find out if you have a draw is to use a test light. Hook up the test light to the Positive side of the battery and touch the Negative side of the battery. It it lights up you have something drawing power. Start to pull fuses 1 by 1 until the light turns off, then find out what the fuse controls. Disconnect each item it controls 1 by 1 until the light turns off and you have your culprit.
Like mentioned above the radio can and will kill a battery over night, I used the test light method to find it and replaced it.
Edit: Forgot to mention to make sure the dome light is off and under hood light bulb is removed.

Hey man, could u explain why that works? My thought says the test light will light up when u give it power and ground.

Thanks :nice:
I wish I could explain it but it was something I was thought years ago when I worked at Ford (heavy-line tech assistance). One of the drive-ability techs who basically chases electrical demons all day thought me that trick. You normally connect it to the ground and then test positive connections, doing the opposite should do little to nothing (some items keep a small charge for a bit). But if something is drawing power the light will turn on nice and bright (completing the circuit maybe?).
