hey there everyone! hope y’all are doing better than i am. i’m having serious trouble with my 2003 Mustang V6 Convertible.

since purchasing this car at 98,000mi. i’ve had a consistent vibration in the steering wheel, and more.

at 35mph and below, there are light vibrations and movement in the front end, felt through the steering wheel and gas pedal, also accompanied by a ton of bump steer. it feels as though any slight imperfection in the road is directly translated to the steering wheel

at 55-60mph, without fail, the light vibrations turn significantly more violent, to the point of shaking the whole car. i’m at my wits end, as i truly love this car but this problem makes it hell to drive.

here’s what i’ve done so far:
both front hub bearing assemblies, inner/outer tie rods, sway bar end links, struts, ball joints, and steering rack bushings. all 4 new tires (balanced and wheels inspected), all 4 rotors and pads (replaced bad front driver caliper, system flushed), and rear shocks

can someone PLEASE help me get to the bottom of this issue

Welcome to !

I'll give my shot - have you double-checked bolts and nuts in various locations? For example, strut mounting areas, LCA mounting points, etc. And have you had it aligned recently?

well i installed all the struts myself so im confident there, but i haven’t checked my LCA bolts. and yes, forgot to mention but i’ve had it aligned multiple times after installing these parts. absolutely nothing that i’ve done has made even the slightest difference with my issue

This will be a long shot, but I've had something similar in a one of my old II's. There was a "loose" upper control arm nut. I quote that because it wasn't loose per se, but it was failing to clamp onto the frame rail for whatever reason. My symptoms were a little different, though. It would drive fine no matter the speed, but if I hit a bump hard enough, the UCA would shift, causing the steering to jerk. This is why I gave the suggestion of checking the LCA mounting bolts.

How about the K member mounting bolts? Or the frame rails that the K member is bolted to? I'd suspect those could be an issue. There are many of us who have had to repair/replace those frame rails on Fox cars, it doesn't seem out of the question that your car may be suffering from that fate....

Here's a pic of my old 84 vert that I had to replace the rail for an example. There are 2 bolts per side - imagine if those bolts rusted enough that they gave way.

thanks for such an insightful reply my friend! i’ll check out everything you mentioned, although surprisingly my car is pretty dang rust-free. if either of those aren’t the issue, where would i start looking next? should i replace the steering rack first? i’ve also heard that driveline u joints could cause shaking, but it almost certainly feels like it’s in the steering. i also don’t want to fork up the cash for road force balancing if it’s unnecessary, but i’ve read that as a possible fix as well. thanks again for your advice

Driveline vibrations can cause some issues, but this part:

That makes it sound as if it's in the suspension somewhere. It won't hurt to check your drive line, that could help explain the vibrations, but I'm fairly sure it won't have any say in bump steer. Usually that's associated with suspension components loose or out of alignment, as experienced in my old Mustang II and it's loose mounting bolt, for example.

You’ve replaced a lot of parts, but have you had it aligned and tires balanced? If that’s been done, the drive shaft can do that if u-joint bearings are bad.

I just went through something similar with my car. I ended up having one of the C-clips in the U-joint wasn't seated all the way allowing the driveline to wobble a bit, especially at 40+mph. Definitely check the U-joint and the driveline bolts. I think you likely have two issues going on (the bumpsteer thing seems separate), but fixing this issue totally got rid of the vibration I was having.

I had the same issue. It was the front wheel bearings. You need to by a new hub/bearing assembly. Get both front wheels done.
