should i be burnin this much oil?

so i went out with a couple of my buddies who also have mustangs n we're cruisin around and racin and stuff. i kno my cars been burnin oil since the motors gettin older but it seems like i went through a quart of oil in one night is that normal? i checked my oil this mornin and it is way below add.

One quart in a couple hundred miles (assuming a lot of driving for one night) should leave a PLUME of smoke behind the car... Fill it up then let us know hoe manu miles to burn through a quart... OEMs say one quart per 1000 miles is normal... I bet you are below that...

1 Quart in one night is a lot. I would check the actual mileage under normal driving conditions.

Unless you're losing oil through a leak, that degree of oil consumption should produce blueish gray smoke from the tailpipes. If that's indeed the case and the oil consumption's as high as you said it is, it's time to freshen up the engine with a total overhaul and new piston rings, main/rod bearings, oil pump, timing set, cylinder head clean-up/valve job, and all new seals and gaskets.

I'll add this...if there were lots of burnouts and play racing, you'll use a lot more oil than "grandma" driving it back and forth to work.

If you have any external leaks then they should be fixed. My 88 5.0 used to go through crazy oil but my problem was two fold. My rear intake seals was leaking and I was burning it. I replaced the intake seals, and the valve seals in the heads and the problem was gone with the wind.

what weight oil do you use?If you use the thinner weight (ie 5w-30 10w 30 ) it would burn up that much if you were driving it really hard I had it happen the first time I really romped on my cobra the previous owner still put 5w 30 oil in it with 85,000 miles and it burned about the same that you did I put 10w 40 and it doesnt burn it anymore even if I drive it like I stole it

yea im goin to check all that out. i have been runnin 10w-30. i think im goin to build a motor this winter hopefully jus to freshen things up i kno shes gotta be gettin tired after 123,000 miles

YOu can also try putting in that Lucas oil. I have heard that it works great for these types of situations.

yea ill try that. i use castrol gtx high mileage rite now. should i test compression on my engine. how much compression shud i have?

Test compression....its hard to say how much exactly you should have. But I would say around 110-150 psi on each cylinder. The big thing you want to look for is any unusual cylinders. Like lets say all the cylinders read between 115-130 psi except one, its at 90psi. That would tell you theres an issue with that cylinder.
