What is smog pump n all that other smog stuff, and what difference does it make being on the car or off? My car doesnt pass emissions anyway, i figured i'd get rid of this crap, is it just there to clutter up the engine bay? lol what else can i take off that is restrictive beings my car is a non emissions passing car.... And would it be worth my while to take it out?

Almost every thing related to emmisions shuts off at WOT. Ford designed it that way. The EPA doesn't measure emissions at WOT, so Ford put in the max performance they could get with the standard setup. The total loss in power at WOT is probably in the range of 1%-3%, which would likely get lost in the variations between one dyno pull & and a consecutive one with the same engine & accesssories.

To take advantage of an engine with no smog gear, you need a custom chip to elminate the codes & possible "Limp Mode" condition that the missing smog equipment can cause. The custom chip will taylor the spark advance & fuel/air mixture to a range more suitable for max performance & less friendly to fuel economy & polution control.

What codes? The o2 sensors are before the mid pipe where the smog comes out. That's the only one I can think of. :shrug:
 
Go ahead and scrap the smog pump if you want, I just bought a shorter belt and tore out the smog lines and pump and plugged it at the back of the heads. Dead weight and space if you ask me.
 
EGR will set codes, cause the check engine light to go and & set limp mode. Almost anything that sets the check engine light causes limp mode as long as the light is on.

If you have any doubts, read the following book & show me what I missed.

The 87-88 cars didn't have a check engine light, but the same logic still applies. The EGR has the EGR sensor on it, and it will definitely set the check engine condition with or without a working Check Engine Light.

The EGR shuts off at Wide Open Throttle (WOT), so it has minimal effect on performance. The addition of exhaust gas drops combustion temperature, increases gas mileage and reduces the tendency of the engine to ping. It can also reduce HC emissions by reducing fuel consumption.

The EGR system has a vacuum source (line from the intake manifold) that goes to the EVR, computer operated electronic vacuum regulator. The EGR valve and the passages in the heads and intake manifold route exhaust gas to the EGR spacer (throttle body spacer). The computer uses RPM, Load. and some other factors to tell the EVR to pass vacuum to open the EGR valve. The EGR sensor tells the computer how far the EGR valve is open. Then computer adjusts the signal sent to the EVR to hold, increase or decrease the vacuum. The computer adds spark advance to compensate for the recirculated gases and the slower rate they burn at.

I'm glad to hear that question. Did you not pass the emissions test or are you just not required to take the test at all? If you are not passing an emissions test for HC or CO, you may have something wrong with the motor. The only thing I would say to definitely leave is EGR. EGR doesn't hurt WOT and increases fuel economy. Some people don't like the clutter though. To each his own. I am rebuilding my motor now and will be putting alot of effort into hooking the EGR back up.
 
Well, I have offroad H pipe, and it most likely doesnt pass emmissions, I have a guy that just puts the the stick in the tailpipe of a car that passes, so that I can have the sheet that says PASS/FAIL to file away, so basically he just puts the stickers on for me - PA is sorta easy to find someone who doesn't care and will give you stickers for an extra 10 dollars upon actually testing cost.

I scrapped all the smog crap when i put my Off road H on. Bought a shorter belt. sawed off the ends of the lines going to teh back of the heads. turned them over and bolted them back down. I have noticed little if any gains, but its much cleaner in that area of the engine bay. my smog pump was crap anyways. pully was warped to ****

edit* my car runs perfectly fine also. no runing rich or lean.
