What does the eye watering smoke smell like? Water/antifreeze usually smells sweet, if at all. You need to do a different pressure & leak down test. One that pressurizes the whole cooling system, not the combustion chamber. You could have a leak farther up the intake track than a head gasket, (I have another car waiting for this test).

As far as smoke color, I am finding out good cats can change smoke color or even hide excessive fuel and some oil use. Looking at your plugs was a good idea.
In short, I bet you will find an leaky intake gasket or TB plate gasket leak. Or maybe I am hoping you are just that lucky. Let us know after the coolant pressure test.
