Should I expect the exhaust headers to actually come off? Looks completely rusted.

Early EGR style explorer intake. Circa 1996/1997.

the heads are standard GT40 heads. Flip them over and there might be a part number cast to the underside near the pushrod guides. F1ZE would indicate early 1996 explorer GT40 heads.

that casting number on the heads indicates 1995 manufacturing dates. One in Jan and the other Dec.

How do I get to 24#'s?

In thinking that if I am going to do this, might as well do it once. How do I maximize this setup?

Ive been trying to read through different setups and experiences (its taking a while). Seems like I can keep the stock cam, but if I increase my injectors to 24# I will need a tuned MAF. Should I consider a different TB? I don't think I want to mess with my fuel delivery, at least right now. Also, I def want to stay with the current tranny which I am guessing is a T5.

With just what you have, you don't need a bigger injector. If you haven't already,a fuel pump upgrade wouldn't hurt, just a 110 or 155lph and an adjustable fuel regulator wouldn't hurt. You are correct in if you change injectors, you need to change MAF as well. I went 13.20 on a STOCK 5.0 engine over 20yrs ago.

I do not know of any in the Boston area.

Only way I know how to recover without the machine is if you have a few recovery tanks. Pull a deep vacuum on them and then hook to your system and let equalize. When one remains under 0psi, you’ve recovered it all.

Not practical because who has vscuum tanks sitting around.

Thanks for the response.

Im assuming I will need to purchase new injectors. If I do, id like to target my final build out. My current thoughts are to maximize the GT40 setup and as components need replacing, upgrade them so that after a period of time I will have replaced just about everything.

In reading this article, it seems like I will need to drill out an EGR spot with my explorer intake. Is that correct?

In my continued reading it sounds like the reason to go GT40/Explorer iron combo is that its a budget build. No true value in porting those combos.

That said current TB is 65mm. New combo is 70mm intake. It sounds like a good increase to move from 65mm to 70mm, correct? This article makes it sounds super valuable:

View: https://www.facebook.com/DragRadialPerformance/posts/50l-throttle-body-sizingby-steve-hulett-drag-radial-performanceif-theres-one-thi/1674657835960753/

The GT40/Cobra/Explorer intake entrances can easily be ported to 70mm, which brings us to our next throttle body size, the 70mm. If you don't want to do any porting whatsoever, stick with a 65mm throttle body on your GT40 style intake. Most aftermarket intakes have at least a 70mm entrance, and usually 75mm. The 70mm throttle body has an effective area of 3,149 mm², a 52.7% increase over stock.
