Spare Wheel Mounting

Silly question really.
I'm bringing my trunk back to mostly stock after the PO messed about with it. Is the jack intended to support one side of the spare wheel install. Has anyone ever made a block or similar to fit under here. I've just refurbished my jack and it seems a shame to risk scratching it up under the wheel.
I really hate being a perfectionist!

By the way, the car is a '65 Coupe.

When my full size spare was bolted down w/ the stock rod and t handle, I just wrapped the jack in a small towel to avoid scratching and noise and placed it inside the overturned tire. I am not sure what you mean by supporting the spare w/ the jack. I have since gone to an aluminum mini spare from a '95to save space and weight (saved 28 lbs.).
