Stealth vs RPM

Dennis am I reading this right? You got a stealth intake on a stroked 351 to fit under a 65-65 hood?

If you did, you just screwed up my plans for a 347.:rlaugh:

Well, I used to have a Stealth. NOW I have a Vic Jr. instead and it too fits under the 65' hood (nothing located in the Shelby hood scoop either.) :jaw:

For the Stealth I used strengthened 65' type motor mounts, the air cleaner mentioned above (unmodded) and a Holley HP carb with no choke--it was slightly lower than a choked Holley. The Stealth intake itself was not modded in any way.

For the Vic Jr. same motor mounts, modded the above mentioned air cleaner for 7/16" more drop (really easy to do), used the same carb (MUST remove the choke flange on a standard Holley--HP OK as is), and I angle milled the carb mounting flange 3 degrees (from front to rear) to reduce the angle that the carb sat at. About .300" was removed from the front of the pad were the studs are. Translates to about .250 where the actual carb mounting port begins. With the 3 degree angle mill, there is plenty of meat left at the carb pad and the stud angle change is negligible--didn't need to change a thing in order to bolt the carb down.

Carb now sits almost flat again. I still have a true 1/2" of clearance with the stock like hood.

Car runs much, much better with the proper intake and there is virtually no change in lower end torque thanks to the big stroker. Knocked .3 seconds off my 1/4 and gave me 3 more mpg with no other mods. 6400rpm shifts.

And they said it couldn't be done. . . .

i have two main problems. Headers and Hood scoop bolts. the bolts come down about an inch. the headers (patriot tri y's so you know whats goin on there) have the engine jacked up about another inch or so.

I also agree with the others that the Stealth (or the RPM) would be a good intake on your car. Your performer is probably adequate with your current build, although it is not much different than a stocker.

You will need to swap out the performer in order to move up to the next level.

$100 is a good price. A set of manifold gaskets are around $10. Certainly worth a try if you can overcome some of the height issues. You could always turn the intake over on ebay if it didn't work.

Do the hood scoop bolts need to be about an inch long? Can't the studs or whatever be cut off shorter?

Seems like you should be able to get them down to something less than 1/4 inch. If they are bolts, look for something with a short, flat head like license plate bolts. If studs, install the thinest washers you can find and grind the nuts shorter, install them, and cut off the studs unti they are flat.

Show us a pic of the underside of your hood.

I know you can't do anything about the headers except replace them. Low headers suck. Been there, done that.

As mentioned before, run down to Advance Auto or elsewhere and check out a Holley MaxFlow 360 14" air cleaner, model # 120-102. About $35 if I recall correctly. My Advance keeps them on the shelf in the little speed shop area. It might be what you need for your clearance problems. You could still have distributor cap wire interference if you have a large distributor cap because this air cleaner sits very low--may be a problem with the performer but the higher Stealth should clear.

See if they will let you check the base on your car--or you could get it and return it if it won't work. Smaller diameter air cleaners normally do not have any (or have very little drop), although you could pretty much place one up in your hood scoop assuming your hood has been cut for it. My mold-in hood scoop has been opened and could hold a 11" wide air cleaner (if they made them.) Narrow oblong ones can also be used with the proper hood opening. Ford Racing has a 10" filter that has a drop base. Never seen one but you can get it for about $25 (plus handling charge) from Summit.

With your combo, all you can do is experiment with different ideas until you find one that works. Sometimes it just takes some thought and determination . . . .

i got the holley air cleaner last night and it fits good except for the fuel line. gotta get a 90 degree elbow down and its good. the hoodscoop bolts are fiberglassed in and the maker didnt use bolts thats threaded all the way so the amount of washers on there is needed.

intake...here i come!

If you have a chrome fuel log, most of them are copper and can be bent with care. Just don't try to make the bend by the nut at the threaded fitting.
