Stereo sound with a loud exhaust - you really don't need much

I was worried about not being able to hear my stereo over the loud Dynomax dual exhaust running out the back. I have a lot of power in my 65, and it is fairly loud.

Fear not. All you really need is a good deck and a nice pair of 6x9s and you are good to go. I have a cheap $100 JVC deck, and a nice pair of Alpine 6x9s ($200 with warranty), and I hear over my car just fine. No need for Amps or subs or anything like that. The bass hits just fine. I listen to rock mostly, but the Beastie Boys "Paul's Botique" sounded just fine. This was with the windows down too.

Just thought I would let yall know before some of you went overboard and added 500 lbs of stereo equipt. to your rides.

Thanks. Good info. I've been debating on what kind of groundwork to put into my car during the wiring restoration, so that when I install the stereo (last step or two) I don't have to rerun more wire. It looks like the 800 watt amp and the 2/0 power cable on the shelf at Wal-mart might not actually be needed in order to "modernize" my stereo. . I just have to figure out how to make a new faceplate for my '69 to fit a new stereo.

Hey norcal what you got? I have alpine 7984 HU, crystal 6.5" comps in custom made kicks, powered by a US accoustics amp (100 watts to each side), Have a Elemental design K series 12" sub ordered, along with a Avionixx 400 watt amp. Plan on porting the box, and somehow fitting it all in my trunk and making it look pretty.

6x9s are what really makes it loud as hell, I should have gone with better quality up front, the 6x9s overpower and it doesn't sound as good with the fade up too forward

I did the custom box thing, it looks great, but it's also wood and heavy, I wish I would have found a way to make it all lighter.

I don't even have any rear fill at the moment. Definitley get some quality speakers to run up front and run them off an amp, then just run the 6x9's out back off the HU.

thats how i ride for now, but im wanting something in there to listen to on 4 hour drives to/from college

I have the expensive stereo in the Explorer, 1.2kW and a fried clutch ... My Mustang does really well with the factory AM 8 track hooked to a small 2 channel amp powering a set of cheapo Pioneer 6x8s. Plus an AM-modulated FM reciever underdash... I'm thinking about adding an FM-modulated CD changer in the glovebox when I get things running again, so I'd have a CD player going through my FM reciever going through the factory 8 track player, LOL.

I use to be a BIG BIG sound guy. I had 14 speakers in my fox and everything was custom made by me!! After $4000 in stereo equipment....I realized...it wasnt worth it.

I like to stick to basics now...some 3 way 5 1/4"s and some 2way 6x9s is what my classic will be getting. 35watts to each 5 1/4 will be great. You will be AMAZED at the difference in sound if you box your 6x9s under your package tray and run a small amp to them. They will sound SO much better and I guaranteed it will sound like you have some nice subs up in there!

OK, I think I have you all beat. Factory AM with 8 track, its the latest tech, best money can buy. Dont laugh but it will play the urban cowboy 8-track like a champ. I just think that there needs to be more AM stations, it seemes like everyone should be jumping on this AM thing. When it takes off I can say I will be ready for it. lol

I bought an Aiwa MP3 deck and put some Pioneer 6x9's in the rear. Sounds great too. I dont think I will add the subs and Amps. I will however replace the 4x10 dash speaker with a set of Pioneer 4" in the dash to complete the stereo surround sound. On a side note, if you use the Pioneer 6x9's, you will not have to cut any of the sheet metal to get them to fit. They are shallow enough.

yep, i have the same setup... a 4 year old Sony 200W deck with 2 6x9s in back and 2 small (4.5" i think) ones in front. I can hear it easily over the 40 series Delta Flows. And I'm not a music afficionado, so I don't care about the latest decks, 6 disk changers, and dual 12" subwoofers in back heh.
