Swapping my engine with a fox engine, few questions.

Hey guys, i found an engine to replace mine. Its from a fox, its got 5x,000 miles on it and is in great shape. Has gt40x heads, and i belive a B cam. I know ill have to switch the fox timing cover/waterpump our for mine, along with the acessories, but i have a question about the lower intake manifold.

Both my engine and the new one have cobra intakes, mines a 94-95, and the new one would obviously have a 93. Could i just leave the lower intake on the new motor and put my 94-95 upper on it? this would save me from reinstalling the lower intake manifold for no reason.

Also, will the timing chain from the fox work with the sn95 cover and water pump?


If anyone is feeling really generous would they list stuff that I will need?
I know ill need new plugs (awsf-32c's), header gaskets (ms90000's), but what kind of gaskets do i need for the timing cover? and should i get a new waterpump and timing chain?

If it was me, I would go ahead and replace both the water pump and timing chain while you have the cover off. Not that much time involved. If you are looking for a good reasonably priced water pump, Advanced Auto parts has a very nice unit in their Signatures Series pump, plus it has a lifetime warranty. I used one of the pumps when I built my 331 and have no problems cooling wise.

Well looks like i gave you some wrong info....looks to be about $60 to $90, I have a friend that works there and he gives me discounts.
 
I would swap out the lowers, the 93 styles coolant tubes are a little different, as well as there being a threaded hole for a sensor on the first runner of the passenger side(#5).....

that is just my opinion though, and i would sell the other intake to recoupe some money....

IIRC, that is about what I paid for my Stewart high flow pump. :shrug:

felpro makes decent header gaskets, as well as any other gasket your gonna need (timing and water pump)

also hows your harmonic balencer look? would be a good time to replace that too while u have it off
 
The full story behind the engine is that its in a car that my friend is buying. The car is totaled due to frame damage, but has a good engine. Another of my friends is buying the cobra intake from it. If there wasnt a difference between the lower manifolds i was just giong to give him my lower, with the 93 upper, and leave the 93 lower on it so I dont have to replace it.

Isnt the sensor in the number 5 runner the temperature sensor? or am i thinking of something else?

The harmonic balancer on my car isnt in the greatest of shape, but the one on the new engine is in pretty good condition.
 
The sensor in the #5 runner is the fox's version of our IAT (Incoming Air Temp) sensor. It's called ACT (Air Charge Temp) sensor on the fox. Ours is in the cold air intake tubing between the MAF and throttle body. Better to get the temp of the air where the sensor is not on the hot lower manifold. Then again, the temp of the air in the manifold is probably more accurate for air/fuel ratio determination :shrug:
If I remember right the IAT and ACT are interchangable just different names and positions.
The engine's temp is determined by the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor.

That sensor if for the gauge on the dash. the ECT sensor the EEC uses is the one located in the hard coolant line near the thermostat housing, it is the one the EEC uses to turb the fans on and off among other things.

I think your buddy should use the 93-older lower as I have heard that the calibrations in the eec are made using the higher temps that the ACT sensor sees in the intake runner versus ours that knows the ACT is in the cooler inlet tubing between the MAF and the TB. You might want to check with other fox guys and see if any of them have moved it to the inlet tubing without any problems, if they have then its a none issue.
 
What should I do to the motor while its sitting on a stand? are there things I should replace? (besides the timing cover and water pump)?

Also, how much would it cost for a shop to do the engine swap. My parents want to know as they might just pay for it to be done while Im at school, so I can just sell the car.

im more interested in the later, as that seems like the most likely option right now.
