Greetings from NJ,
I'll be starting the engine/trans swap in a few weeks. The A4LD in my '92 Notch is shot and I intend to swap a T-5 in eventually, but for now I'm just going to swap in the 2.3T and A4LD from the TurboCoupe (taking them out as one piece) just to get rid of the TC and get the Mustang running and drivable. Over the next year or so, I'll pull the motor for a rebuild and do the T-5 swap at that time.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me before I get started? I plan on using the LB3 computer from the TC and repinning it for the Mustang (yes, I've read and printed the info from Stinger's site). I'm going to try and keep the premium/regular fuel switch (just need to figure out how). I also need to keep the EGR stuff so I need to figure that out as well. I'll keep the Mustang's 7.5 rear for now, but will be using the 8.8" rear from the TC eventually (it has 3:73 gears like my 7.5 so I won't need to adjust the speedo gear).
Here's a big question: Will the 1988 TurboCoupe engine pass the 1992 Mustang emissions requirements? They are both OBD1, right? so hoepfully it won't be an issue, but I need that EGR to work.

Thanks again,
WES

Just giving myself a BUMP!!!

I spoke with the state inspection people and there is no difference in emmissions requirements for 1988 and 1992 so I'm good with that. Just need that EGR to work.

if your state has a visual inspection, they may wonder how you aquired a VAM over the stock MAF ....how you went for a DIS to a dizzy, and how you got a turbo motor when Ford stopped offering them in 1989 (merkur). Besides those little stumbling blocks, i dont see any trouble.

living in so-cal i see the trouble of engine swaps, luckily my stang is an 87'. Just depends on who you take it too for smog. Here in California you hafta take it to a smog referee to validate the engine swap (and smog equipment there in) , once that is done they issue you a new emissions door tag, then its just passing smog as usual. GOOD LUCK! heheh

I seriously doubt that the NJ State Inspectors know about all those differences. Besides, if it fails all I have to do, according to them, is go to a specific Inspection Station that deals with engine swaps and prove it's a 1988 engine and electronics and then it's held to the 1988 standards. Sounds similar to the CA situation.

But does anyone have any words of wisdom specific to the swap?? I'm pulling the engine and trans as one piece, if it helps answer any questions. Of course, I've never pulled an engine before, so this should be interesting

Thanks again,
WES
