I called a guy who does tachometer restoration because of the face of mine is stained and I cannot get it cleaned. Anyway, he said to me that he would swap out a mint condition 6K tach face and put it on mine and do the calibration for $150 plus I have to pay shipping both ways. I asked him how I knew if the tach needed calibration, and he said it would need it for sure. Anyway, I wanted to ask everyone if that is correct and is that a good price? I have never priced that out and have no idea what is good and what isn't. Also, does anyone have any feedback on the "tachman"? Thanks guys.

I had a tach for a 70 ss chevelle done by him over 10 years ago... excellent work and he was able to clean mine and it was great.

As for the calibration, yours will need it, but it probably wont remain 'that' accurate for very long. It is a current sensing device not to mention that it is over 35 years old. It will be ok for a while and much better than before.

Where is the best place to buy the factory looking overlay? And I would also like to know how come if I did have it calibrated, it wouldn't last long? Thanks.

The technology isnt very good. Like I said, it was designed to sense current pulses, not voltage ones like the new ones. You just cant ask extreme accuracy out of those older tachs. If I were to guess, it would probably be +/-500 rpm even after calibration. To some, that is alot, and others it is good enough.

Is that right? It can be off by that much? 500 RPM seems like a lot to be off. Have others experiences this? What is the other alternative? Maybe an aftermarket tach? Is there another tach that would either fit or would I have to go with one of those tachs that go over the steering wheel or dash? Thanks guys.

Then you are one of the people that 500 is alot... I wouldnt change a thing if you have the original tach. They look great and tachman can calibrate it (he should be able to tell you the accuracy) and just put it back in all nice, new and clean.

As long as it is repeatable... who cares. If you are racing it, you should use a more accurate tach anyway. If you are drag racing.. buy a shift light. As long as you shift at the same point everytime (no matter if is says 5 or 5.5) does it matter? You know you have acheived maximum torque/hp at that point anyway, shift... dont hold out just because you want to shift it at 5.5 and not 5. Or, maybe it will make you feel better if it says 6, right?

Point is, just be thankful you have an original (you are one of the cool ones) and just use it. They look fabulous in there and are actually worth a bit of money. When its time to go full race with the car, get the JME/Reenmachine one (they loog great too)

Just my opinion, and your mileage may vary. Mark

I had the Tachman (Gary) restore and recalibrate my rally pac tach 3 years back - very nice work and the tach reads less than 100 rpm high (compared to an Autometer I did a temp hook up on for comparison purposes) at 5,000 rpm, which is what he stated on his calibration sheet that he included when he returned it. No problems here with his work.

Just out of curiosity, what does it read now... 3 years later?

I never questioned his work, like I said, I had one done by him and it was excellent and it was actually a repair job where the tach had stopped working. Excellent work in my opinion.

I had herd that the factory tach where worth money but I didn’t know they where like this I have a 8K tach cluster with a trip counter in my car and was planning on adding auto meter gauges to get better fuel, temp and oil pressure but now I guess I will have to keep it stock and add better gauges in the console opening. Thanks for the link I will get into contact with him on mine as well.
