I met this guy last night. A real douchebag. I was on watch last night and reading Motor Trend. He comes up to me to ask what I was reading. I showed him. He tells me about a 70 Mustang he has at home that's putting 800hp to the wheels. I was like oh really? He also said he had a 351C built, sitting in his garage at home. He claimed 600hp. He said he had a chance to get a Windsor, but he said he'd rather have the bigger displacement. WHAT?! I told him a 351 is a 351. He told me the difference between the two was the Cleveland had a larger bore and longer stroke, the Windsor is a truck engine, and the Cleveland was built for racing. I told him the difference was in the heads. He said yes, but also in a displacement increase, and that Ford just didnt advertise it. It claime the 351C was the same basic engine as a 390. I just nodded and said "oh." He told me he found a 70 Shelby GT350, good body and frame, but the engine was toast sitting in a yard. He wanted to use it for his buit 351C. He offered the man $10,000 but he turned it down. I said $10,000 is a lot to pay for a rolling chassis, and that you'd be better off getting an standard Mustang frame and not waste a Shelby. He siad he wanted it for the suspension. I said, "oh." He decides to start talking about his 87 Camaro 2.8L. He told me he hopes to get it in the 13's. I told him its very unusual to build up an old V6. He agreed and said he has a buddy that has a twin turbo 2.8 Camaro. I aksed him how he did it. He told me his buddy had it all fabricated with 2 (yes 2) intercoolers. 1 per turbo and a Y-pipe connecting them into the intake. Again I nodded and said "oh." He THEN said he wants to do the same thing to his Camaro but just using one turbo. He told me he had a pair of Hooker headers that were going to feed into his turbo. I told him "wouldnt you need a turbo manifold, headers dont work with turbos." He said that the same guy who did his buddy's is going to fabricate a y-pipe to connect the 2 headers to the turbo. "Uh-huh." He starts on about his rear end next. Said he just bought a posi-rear end. I said, "Oh, you mean a limited slip." He said "No, a posi." I told him its the same thing. He said the posi locks the axles so both wheels spin equally. I said, "that's a full locker and thats great if you're looking for off-roading or straight line performance, but you won't handle for *****. A posi or a limited slip will let both wheels spin at different speed with power going to both of them. You need the outside wheel moving faster than the inside wheel if you want your car to handle." He said that a LSD slowly tranfers power to the wheel that's not spinning until they both start spinning. Confused I asked how the posi works then. He said he didnt mean it locked completely, but it allows the inside wheel to do a quarter turn ahead before the outside wheel and that makes for better turn in. I said that doesnt make sense. He told me he did a bunch of research on it. I said, "oh" and continued reading my magazine until he left.

ya, some of that junk is hilarious. i knew a guy who said his buddy's neon could beat a viper and a vette cuz he put a viper header on his 4 banger neon, i laughed wondering how they put a 5 cylinder bank header on a 4 banger..

as for the throttle body, alot of people do mods like that. for example, i have a buddy who builds stinkin awesome volkswagens and hes currently putting a dual 60mm lightning throttle body on his turbo 16v 4 banger.

my next door neighbors kid once told me his escort would do 12's in the 1/4 and 160mph on the street just because he had installed a "racing" transmission. i asked him how a tranny would get the car into the 12's with no engine mods and he said it was because of the way the gears are spaced and gave me a look like I was the idiot for asking.

390= "FE" bigblock....part of the 352 family....not even close to the same motor.
i have 2 gusy ay my school just like that....one claims he has over 400 wheel hp in his el camino with a 2bbl carb and 215 tires. it must be a sleeper

The funny part is “I was on watch reading Motor Trend", that's funny. I'm just messing with ya. So where are you and what’s your rate?

Believe the freakin morons you run into in the service, it’s an umbrella for the decay of society. You should be used to these stupid people, and to think he'll be a chief someday and actually have responsibility.

Sounds to me like you did the right thing. You pinned down all his misinformation for your own sanity but were tolerant enough to know that there is alot of misinformation out there.I'm told even the dull and the ignorant have thier story.

I'm an AT on board the JFK. We were just participating in Fleet Week in NY and I had the switchboard watch. Apparently no one had the number to the ship because of 4 hours, not one person called. I'm glad I brought my mag!

here's to a fellow sailor I presume

I work with these 2 dip****s that are like that. One claimed he had a Chevy 350 bored out to a 502!!! When I said that there wasn't enough block to bore it out that far, he insisted that it was a "special block".

The other guy claimed he had some year of a GTO (69 I think) with a 442 big block in it. When I mentioned to him, that there was no such thing as a 442 big block. That the 442 designation was an Olds deal, and didn't stand for the displacement of the engine his story quickly changed to it being a 440. . At least he didn't say it was a hemi. At that point I just started nodding.

Geez guys, it all made perfect sense to me. Just what is the problem here???

Great story--I do the same thing by just saying "yeah, uh-huh" because I don't want to waste my energy beating intelligence into the void between their ears.

Yeah, I would have been reading Mustangs and Fords myself.

I'm guessing since you're on the boat, you're I level. Wait until you have to deal with O level techs. They're the kind of people that think OFF stands for On Full Force. And don't get me started on those Machinst Mates.

Hey,I'm O-level. I'd expect someone (at least as far as aviation is concerned) for someone to O-level before they were I-Level. There is just flat out more O-level people needed.

No offense meant to you bro. I've been I level since I joined. It's just that most of the O level I've dealt with have been dumb as a door knob. But that could be the community I was in.
