Throttle Body Coolant Bypass?

I've drained my coolant to fix a leak, and while I'm at it, I've been thinking about bypassing the coolant passage through the throttle body. It's obvious that the coolant will heat up the throttle body and part of the upper manifold, that has to cost SOME power, however little. What are the pros/cons of doing this? What is the best way to go about it?

yep, the debate on its purpose is usually that the lines are there for TB de-icing. if that is not an issue, ditch them, IMHO.

i bypassed mine with a plug in back of the intake and i put a short piece of hose with a bolt in it in the front.i don't think it really helped anyway.the only reason i bypassed mine was my stock egr spacer was leaking and when i upgraded to a 70mm unit i never plugged it back up.i can't see anything going wrong because it's not hooked up unless you live in a very cold climate year round.

Yep that is what I have done to mine...I live in Arkansas and it usually (during the winter) doesn't get below 0*...and there are only a few nights of the winter that can do that or have the potential...I usually let it idle outside for a bit before I head out to places to let it warm up anyways...so the underhood heat would correct the "icing" problem...

Yeah I know it...I get tired of the rain...it seems like our Winter is always "messy"... :( Gets my car all muddy :nonono:
 
There's a pretty good debate about this one. I haven't reached a conclusion yet. One school of thought is that the lines are there to use warm coolant to prevent icing of the throttle body. Under certain conditions, the low pressure/low temp. conditions at the throttle body supposedly could cause icing to occur. What doesn't make sense about this to me is that the heat is downstream of the t/b. If you were trying to prevent icing, seems you'd introduce the heat upstream of the icing. Furthermore, it takes several minutes for the coolant to warm up enough to help any - and I'd think the icing potential would be greatest after a cold start.

The other school of though is that the coolant is there to keep the egr spacer/valve from overheating. It does have exhaust flowing through it which is quite a bit warmer than anything around it. The downside of this argument is why didn't the Cobra intakes have it?

Either way, it doesn't seem to make a big difference one way or the other. So do what you like. And if it causes a problem, put it back the way it was. I got rid of the whole egr spacer when I eliminated the egr on mine. So it's a non-issue for me.
 
i wonder what they did on the 93 cobras? did they use 1 hose or block it off coming out of the lower intake and block it from the heater core pipes that run along the passenger side of the intake
 
wonder why they did not employ a heat riser pipe off the headers to the intake if icing was a concern (seems enough other vehicles do that).

do EGR's ever leak internally or would it be an external leak? been thinking of duping my lines together but wouldnt if there is not much risk of having an unseen leak.
