Ok,
I know how the DL works: Straight cut gears that mesh in and out during corners and lock up fully while going straight, they're loud and aggressive.

I know how LSD works: clutch packs that try to deliver power on the straight to both tires but are easier on the ears in the corners, with clutches that can wear out

But the trac lok is foreign to me, does it have beveled gears and works similar to the DL or does it have clutches like the LSD?

I'm looking for something not as aggressive as the full DL (not to mention $500 vs. $400 for the trac lok) but will not have to be replaced like the LSD will eventually have to be.

take the LSD man, you'll have a much better trip. oh sorry, yeah the LSD is just a different way of saying clutch type posi.

the detroit tru trac that was mentioned uses constant mesh helical gears and are supposed to be quite dependable and work VERY well, that is what i will eventually use on mine

The DL is not as bad as I've seen written. There is a "thunking" sound when it ratchets but if you are building an agressive car (power/handling) in the first place I just don;t think you should fear their "agressiveness". Having said that, I chose to use one of the aftermarket "soft lockers", they are MUCH stronger than LSD/TL yet will slip much softer than the DL. I am not a fan of LSDs at all. It is not a matter of if they fail but when, particularly with hard driving or drag racing. I've seen many cars with a lot of money in the case put down a peg-leg stripe.

Check out PowerTrax or ARB, just as another option.

A "Trac Lok" ***IS*** a (clutch type) LSD. It is just Fords name for it.

If you don't want clutches there is the Detroit True Trac which is a gear type LSD. There is also the Auburn which is a cone clutch type with a well deserved reputation for sucking.

uh, just curious, what is the problem with the auburn rear

that is what my mechanic put in my car, i didn't specify anything to him except i wanted 3:55 gears

i'm not racing it and only drive slightly agressive on the street......

From what I understand the Auburn will work well and do the job BUT when it finally gets trashed, it is non rebuildable so you will have to start from scratch again.
