Tranny Cooler

I am planning to convert my 65 Vert from a C4 to a 91 Mustang AOD this winter. I want to add a trans cooler but not sure where to put it. Does someone want to tell me where to stick it?

Really though, in front of your radiator or on the side of your fender apron underneath the fluid bag/tank might work. Are you running hard lines or rubber?

The transmission people I talked with recommend running the fluid through the radiator before going to a cooler. The plan is to run the hard line to the radiator with a rubber line out of the radiator to the cooler and a hard line back to the AOD.

I agree... and defiantly in front of the radiator... that way when the air blows through your rad. then it will also go through you cooler.

what he has in mind i think will be the wrong shape. he will probably want something more, shall we say rounded for your suggestion.

not really. but the best place for a trans cooler is going to be in the coolest air stream possible, he might have to hire the fonz

That will work fine.
But I've had mine running straight to the cooler for years with no issues.

My thinking was to get all the heat out of the radiator I could.

i might take issue with that routing. transmissions want consistent temperatures, not just cool temps. and a way to get that consistent temperature is to use an aftermarket cooler that is way over sized before the cooler in the radiator. that way you get a more consistent fluid temperature back to the trans of about 210 degrees. it also helps cool the engine a bit as well.

I run an after market cooler in front of the radiator. 8" convertor on the street, temp stays at 210-220 on the exit line and 160-180 in the pan. Usually, the temps in the pan match the engine temps. I don't have an integral cooler in my radiator.

Thermostatic valve on bypass to the tranny cooler when open... forget running it through the radiator =)

It is more complicated in some ways but I like this method best personally.

If not, run it to the cooler first then to the radiator.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have a B&M cooler and the tranny rebuilt. One more question... which fitting on the tranny is the output and which the return line?

http://www.transmissioncoolers.us/H7B.html this is my cooler if the B&M doesn't work for you. If the lines are the same as the TH400 leaves from the lower port and returns back into the trans on the top one.
