Tri-y header options - ground clearance

I have a 67 Coupe, 5.0EFI, T-5, clutch cable conversion, and lowered suspension (shelby drop, 620s less 1/2 coil). The prior owner installed an unknown brand of long tube headers. Now that I've lowered the suspension, I have about 2-3 inches of ground clearance at my header collector - not enough. I need new headers and am concerned about ground clearance, clutch cable clearance, and power. I know shorties would probably be the easiest way around the clearance issues, but I understand I'd give up a bit of power/torque over LTs or Tri-Ys. I plan to upgrade to Aluminum heads, and may even stroke it in the future & I don't want to buy headers now that will choke my engine later. I know FPA makes some slick LTs that tuck up nicely, but they are more spendy than I'd like. So that leaves me with Tri-Y's. I'm considering Dougs Headers Tri-Y's pn D690YS. Has anyone run these with the clutch cable setup? Any other suggestions out there? Even the Doug's are more than I'd really like to spend. Any less expensive Tri-Y options you are using with good ground and clutch cable clearance? Thanks.

The D690YS is the manual version, I think D690YA is the auto version. But if these don't accomodate a clutch cable, it looks like I'll need other options. I have considered going to a hydraulic clutch, but probabaly wouldn;t do it right away, as I have more pressing (and $$$) issues to address first. So I'll need to look for other options.

Have you looked at the Mac long tubes? I have them on my 67, no ground clearance issues and no issues with the clutch cable (my T5 is from a 94 so the cable is lower, but it looks like they would work even better with the fox cable location).

I recall reading about problems with Tri-Y headers in general, with regard to Mustang Steve's clutch cable setup. Though I don't recall seeing anything specific to the Doug's version, you might try searching Steve's FYI Ford forum. The late-model bellhousing determines where the cable must pass, so even if your cable conversion is from another source, the info should all be pretty accurate.

Hmm, the Macs look interesting - nice price, but it looks like the coating is not a thermal coating, just cosmetic? Gikort, is your front end lowered at all? I'm about 2" lower than stock...

it is some sort of thermal coating, but it is rough, it pretty much matches the color and texture of a cast aluminum intake. yeah my car is lowered about 1.5"

Like i say, they work with well my 94 T5, and look like they would work perfect with the fox T5s as well, but donno. If you are running stock PS they are swept back further than most headers so they clear the power ram without modification.

I put chrome Try-Ys on a '68 (also lowered about 1.5") I did a year ago and really liked the looks of them, they didn't seem TOO low, however they are angled down and the ground rather than tucked up level with the car, and might be lower than you want. Also the 68 had a C4 so I don't have any experience with them with a cable clutch setup.

Gikort, nice ride - thanks for the pictures. The Macs really do have good ground clearance and sounds like the clutch cable clearance is not an issue either. OK, time to call Mustangs Unlimited. Thanks!

I have a set of Patriot tri-y's on my car and not only do they fit very well, the coating is smooth and the clearance is not even a problem. My car is very low, yet the exhaust is unscarred.

gikort, did you use the Mac H-pipe that MU sells as well? I'm considering a magnaflow 15816 exhaust system (with integrated x-pipe), I suppose I'd need to weld on a ball collector to the magnaflow system so I could bolt up the macs.

Zookeeper, you certainly ARE low. Do you have a t5? Clutch cable?

Sure, I'll try to get some pics off my camera tomorrow. I know I have some, but it's a bit past my bedtime right now. Just as a bit of reference, they tuck up quite nicely and are about the same as the front sub-frame rails. My car has been together about 3 years and the headers have only dragged once and even then it was on a high speed bump and the scrape was minor. Usually the pan on the C4 trans drug first.

does anyone have any good suggestions concerning port matched headers..I have square port Pro Comp heads with angle plugs..are there headers out there that match up? (without spending a 1000 dollars) runnin' out of money..not ideas.....thanks
