i took my 66 to the track for the first time last wednesday and i ran a 16.1 @ 87..i couldn't hook for the life of me but i was kinda disappointed..i was wondering if this is slow or about average for a stock 289 4bbl and 4spd with an open 8inch (not sure of gears)..on thursday i put on a holley 600cfm and edelbrock performer intake i also have longtube headers i'll be putting on next week..any ideas what i should be running on my next trip to the track?

Lots of variables, hard to tell. Stock 289 open rear, yeah 16.1 sounds about right. Long tubes, 4 bbl., you might knock off a few tenths, but don't expect anything crazy. What kind of condition is your short block in? If it's healthy, cam, heads, and maybe gears could get you at least in the low-mid 14s. You can run 10s with some nawz though...

what is your budget?

As cheap as possible I would:
run a set of GT40 or D0OE (351) heads as you can pick them up for under $450 with rockers quite often.
used RPM or RPM air-gap
a good flat tappet cam
torque converter to match cam
exhaust to complement
3.55s

I ran some 8.50s @ 81-82mph with a 306 (late model roller block), b-cam, ported D0OE heads, RPM air-gap, junk tci breakaway converter, 3.55s in the middle of the summer . . .

With just practice alone you could probably knock a few tenths off that time.

Not mentioned here, 289coupe66 has a 4-speed, which is both good and bad. It's good because slow cars tend to go faster with them. It's bad because if you're not used to cleanly launching or shifting that car/trans combo, it will hurt ETs pretty badly.

A tall-geared, peg-leg rear end on street tires isn't going to help the launch at all, either.

thanks guys i do need to work on my launches and shifting..a 2.8 60' definatly isn't cutting it..once i get some more practice and my headers on i'll take her back and see what i can do

i was running an autolite 4bbl the guy who i bought it from had put an original 66 4bbl manifold and autolite carb on but since i was so disapointed i put my new intake and carb on and hopefully this week ill get the headers on and definatly work on my launch before i head back down
