From working in the computer industry, hand-in-hand with some of the largest companies in the US & around the world, I can tell you that for Windows based machines, DELL are used by about 85% of the customers.

DELL builds some of the best server grade machines out there right now. When you buy any off the shelf model, it's tailored to someone who wants all that software and garbage (its called features). Your computer is 3 years old, that's a pretty good run if you ask me, considering hard drives do have an expected life.

Also, I will agree that the hard drives in DELL machines are garbage, but they're also the same generic hard drives found in most computers out there (again, trust me, I do this stuff all day).

Your best bet, build it yourself, or have one built for you. However, like I said, a server grade DELL machine will not dissapoint.

p.s. You should always reload any machine you buy!!!! There'll be backup disks for any software that's pre-loaded which you may want or need.

p.s.s. Dell has moved all of its customer support back to the US.

Im not upset about thier customer service being outsourced, i mean, i could understand them fine, it was the troubleshooting and it seeming like they were purposely trying to delay a fix for my pc so the warranty would be out.

i called back to get updates on the initial calls i had made, and since it was after the warranty expired, all they customer service reps would say is "your warranty is up, there is nothing we can do" even though the problem started before the warranty was expired. they just hadnt figured out that the hard drive was bad before the warranty was up. like i said, i was upset that they had me on the phone for 6 hours repeating the same troubleshooting steps with the same results every time. then everytime i would call in, they would want to start over from the begining.

Once the upper management guy called, he never questioned anything, he just said he would 2 day air me a new hard drive. That was fine with me.. issue would have been resolved. but the one he sent me was broke. (there was a maxtor in it initially, and they sent me a western digital as a replacement) when i called them back and told them this, they said that that hard drive probably wasnt compatable with my PC and there was nothing else they could do becasue i was now out of warranty.. i told the guy that it was the same style drive (non-ide) and they should work the same regardless. He still said there was nothing else he could do, that they did thier part, and taht was it. they went through the trouble to send me a new hard drive, but the one they sent was broke. it didnt even have that anti-static plastic bag on there, so i know it had been opened before.

can you see where im coming from?

Cliffs notes:

-My hard drive died before my warranty expired.
-Went though several hours of troubleshooting to no avail
-Had to escalate call becasue they started saying now the warranty was expired, and there was nothing else they could do (never resolved the issue in the first place)
-Waited another week for escalated call to be returned
-Received "new" hard drive in mail
-"New" hard drive was out of the packaging and wouldnt work, took it to best buy and circut city, both places agreed it was a bad drive
-Called back to report drive they just sent me was bad
-Dell said there was nothing else they could do about it
-Bought new hard drive, everything works perfectly
-Swore to never buy a pre-built computer from Dell again

Im guessing you work for them or know someone that does.. either way, i appreciate it. Ill get the service tag number for ya and the ESC as well (at lunch) then PM it to ya. if you do work for them, you should see all the notes on the account every time i called in.
