Well, as some of you know I went to Arnold, NE for their annual Sandhills Open Road Challenge ( www.sorcrace.com ). It was a blast. This was my first time in any kind of a race besides drag racing. Man, I'm hooked. About 56 miles of holding it to the wood and hitting corners sure beats running the 1/4. I guess I didn't do too bad for my first time. If you haven't looked at the website yet I will tell you just the basics. You pick an average speed class that you want to run in and you have to get closest to your speed to win. The classes are 80, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, and unlimited mph. With my wife's GT I had 2 choices (80 or 90) due to safety regulations. I first picked 80 mph because of the shorter list of entries. After driving the course I decided I better do the 90 class to make it more fun. I averaged 90.25 mph. That was enough to get me 8th out of 21 entries. I'll tell you what, it's hard to average the speed perfectly throughout the whole course.
They also have 1/2 and 1 mile drag-type racing. Winner is the one that gets the closest repeated 2 runs at their top speed. I could only do the 1/2 mile due to safety regulations. The GT runs like a TURD!!!! in Nebraska. The high elevation just killed it. My 2 counted runs were 111.7 and 111.9 mph in the 1/2. I though that was pretty close, but it only got me 13th in the 27 car field. Oh well, it's all about the fun of it. You may want to look at the results page as there were some street cars pretty close to 200 mph in the mile!!!! And they allow street tires only....NO slicks, NO racing tires, NO drag radials, NO DOT slicks! The quickest guy in the 1/2 mi. ran 157mph in a street driven C5 with a supercharger and nitrous.
Anyway, on to something that won't bore you guys as much....
One of the entrants was Bob and his son Landon in a '00 Cobra R. This is no ordinary Cobra R kept in bubble wrap by the owner. Bob and Landon love to drive this car to the limits. Unfortunately due to not having a cage and all the safety gear they could only run the 90 mph class. This car has a 74mm (I think) turbo and the rest is pretty much stock. This is one of the only Cobra R's I have gotten to see and definitely the only one I have sat in. Now for the good part.....Bob took me for a spirited
ride in the car. It feels incredible with the torquey turbo 5.4L. I did get some video that I'll try to load up sometime.
