I'm interested in converting the front hub / rotor / bearing assembly on my fox to one that has a separate hub with bearings and pressed lug studs, and one-piece rotor.

I would like to maintain the 4-lug bolt pattern, as there are many rotors available for 4x4.25", and I don't want to change wheels.

Timken and others make hubs that are designed to mount to the axle, but I need to get the correct inner diameter of the bearing. Does anyone know the diameter of the front axle on the spindle?

After a few searches, I could not find that this has been done before, thought I'm certain someone in the mustang or cobra replica community has done it, either for four- or five-lug hubs.

Thanks,

The hubs are also sometimes called an "axle flange."

I'm not sure it's possible to mount a hub to the spindle of a stock Fox front brake setup. I've definitely never seen it done, or even attempted. If there is a way to do it, you've struck gold because Fox owners have been looking for that same setup for years without any luck.

There is a 5-lug setup already done, but it involves changing the front spindles over to the 94+ setup. It will give you the separate rotor/hub setup you are looking for, with options for MUCH better brakes, but you will need to go 5-lug

If you are set on retaining 4-lug, then i believe Baer might have had such setup 10+ years ago. However it's long been discontinued and i haven't seen used parts for sale for these kits in a long time

Thanks for the info; that's exactly what I'm looking to do, except maintain 4 lugs.

The European Focus RS (Mk1) has quite the brake setup, and it's a 4×4.25" (108mm) with the same 2.5" hub centric rotor. Its 324×28mm (12.75×1.1") size should be more than enough for a Fox, yet should just fit within a 16" wheel. Even the Focus SVT's 300×28mm rotor should be sufficient.

The Focus RS swap has been done before. It's basically the same caliper as the Cobra R, so the swap is done using the Sn95 spindles and Cobra 13" rotors. The caliper is a direct replacement for the 2000 Cobra R brembo.

But, to do this in 4-lug can't be done with OEM factory parts.

The closest you will get is the Baer Sport 12" Kit. It's a 13" Cobra style brake setup, but retains the 4-lug. It appears this is a slip on rotor type setup, but I can't confirm. I am unsure if this setup uses a different spindle, or has a custom hub that bolts to the fox spindle. Now, assuming the baer calipers are off-the-shelf Cobra PBR's, you would be able to bolt a Focus RS caliper to that setup. The Cobra PBR's are usually more than enough for most street Fox Mustangs

Ford Mustang Baer Brakes Front Sport Kit 1979-1993

maybe that gives you a lead to follow. It's the only setup I am aware of that comes close to what you are looking to do

It is not my intention to exclusively use OEM Ford parts. Thank you for steering me in the direction of a 5-lug conversion, but if I were doing that I wouldn't have needed to start this thread.

My intent wasn't to steer you to 5-lugs. The link above to the 4-lug Baer setup is the closest you'll come to a sort of bolt-on 4-lug hub and slip on rotor setup. However, the parts may be baer exclusive parts. You might want to call Baer and speak to their tech dept and see how this kit achieves this design. Other than that, you might be out of luck.

Right now, it is not known if parts exist to do what you seek to do. If you do find parts, you would be helping out a LOT of Mustang guys. This question is frequently asked in terms of a bolt-on replacement 4-lug hub for the Sn95 spindle I posted above. As far as i know, this does not exist.

If a manufacturer made the Sn95 hub in 4-lug, they would sell every one they made because plenty of guys want to do exactly what you ask. This question comes up every other week and a solution has not been found

I just need to find the right bearing. I only asked one question above, because my Fox is in another city, and I don't have access to another with the wheels off, or a fox spindle.

Here's the question again:

Does anyone know the diameter of the front axle on the [fox body V8] spindle?

It's a tapered spindle. Which portion do you want? Inner, outer? I can't get to my spare spindles til the weekend

Ideally, all three metrics: inner diameter with race length, inner diameter, and length/angle of taper,

Thanks!

Also, does anyone know the diameter of the SN95 spindle hub "axles"
These appear not to be tapered.

That's kinda what I was trying to imply in my earlier posts. The SN95 spindles are probably a better choice to use as the spindle is designed for a separate hub. Not sure what your end goal is in terms of which calipers you plan to run or your desired rotor dia, but there is a lot more variety in the Sn95 spindles in terms of what can mount up, vs the fox spindles.

Unfortunately, i can't get a measurement as my Sn95 spindles are installed on my car, but i think you can easily find this info out as tons of guys have sets sitting waiting for install.

If you do find a hub that works, please post your results. What you are seeking is the holy grail in terms of Fox Mustang brake upgrades. many years ago i asked this exact question in terms of a replacement 4-lug hub for the Sn95 spindles and go nothing but dead ends.

I'm surprised this Wilwood Hub did not come up in search results. At $166 it's a little spendy, but it seems like a direct fit, and doesn't require SN95 spindles, which go for $150-200/pr used.

The only potential problem I see is hub-centric rotors and wheels. The image is of a different part, but they all seem to have tapered centers which doesn't seem like it would center the brake disc or wheel.

I've answered my own question with extensive part research online.
Inner shaft diameter: 1.375"
Cone Length: 0.720"
Cone Radius: 0.140"
Cup Length: 0.550"

Outer shaft diameter: 0.865"
Cone Length: 0.655"
Cone Radius: 0.050"
Cup Length: 0.745"
