Picked me up a set of march u/d pulleys a while back, and I am sick of looking at them and there going on the car. I was looking it over wallago (also found out my rear seal is now leaking ) and I can't get a impact gun to slip on the socket thats on the nut. It's reccomended to use a impact gun, but damn it just won't go. My dad I think has a stubbier one, but I'm still not sure how it will work. Also, is it much of a PITA to get the water pump and crank ones off? Can't see the crank pulley bolts right now, but it may be easier with the shroud and fan off. How long should a job like that take? Anything I may need, or anything I should be careful about? Thanks!

1. Remove belt.
2. Remove water pump pulley - held on with 4 bolts - should come off easily - bolt on new water pump pulley
3. Remove crank pulley - held on with 4 bolts - should come off easily - bolt on new crank shaft pulley.
4. Leave alternator pulley alone - this will help prevent charging problems - some people will install an overdrive pulley on the alt for this reason.
5. Buy a dozen belts and hope one fits! Or take a piece of string and measure the length needed - subtract 1" so the tensioner will be effective - you won't be able to measure the actual length, since the string won't be strong enough for the tensioner.
6. Have a beer!
Total time - about 30-60 minutes not counting all the time spent driving to the parts store to get a belt that fits.

I don't think you need to remove the shroud - just unbolt the fan (4 bolts) and let it sit in the shroud and then remove the WP pulley - I think that would work.

Good luck

Thanks. It says the factory belt will fit, so I am probably going with that. I don't idle much in traffic, and I don't have anything electrical really upgraded, so I may slip the alt pulley on there, and if I don't like it, take it off.

To remove the alt pulley you will need to remove the alternator and then use the impact gun on it - pretty much impossible to get it off in the car. When I did my pulleys I did an ac delete so I needed a new belt - but thinking about it, you are right, you probably wont need a new belt.

Good luck

Well if it's going to be that much of a PITA, the 2 or 3 hp it adds isn't worth it then. I may mess with it a bit and try to see if a stubby impact gun will slip in there, but forget it. Other than that, it doesn't look too hard. You will have to send me the "equipment" to perform step #6, as I can't exactly buy it yet.

Its supposed to add like 10hp and its really not that much of a pain in the ass, it just takes some time.

it says you can use stock belt but its a lie... i had to get a shorter one! its easy to install but i would leave the alt pulley alone due to the charging issues

With the underdrive pulleys, your better off leaving the stock alternator pulley on,for at least half decent charging. If you find that the charging is poor at idle speeds, with moderate to heavy accessory loads, you can install an overdrive alternator pulley to improve charging at idle speed,(which is what I did).

If you have a 90`5.0L you can remove the alternator pulley nut with a impact gun using a swivel attatchment on the gun.

Be warned, because sometimes the pulley can be a real pain to get off even with the nut removed because of rust/corrosion on the inside diameter of the pulley and rotor shaft.

Just to add regarding belt sizes;my 89,5.0L with AC takes a Dayco size 5060900 stock and with the ASP street crank + waterpump underdrive pulleys with stock alternator pulley or ASP overdrive alternator pulley Dayco size 5060895, which is a 1/2" shorter.

If you leave the stock alternator pulley on,I`m not quite sure if the stock belt will be long enough. It may be at the bare minimum tension range on the belt tensioner scale, however,if you loosen the belt tensioner mounting bolt slightly, you can move the tensioner up and down a little bit to add more or less tension adjustment range. If you position the tensioner downward as far as it will go you may be OK in getting away with using the stock belt.

I'm pretty sure you can't move the tensioner without grinding off the little nipple on the back?

I used all 3 pullies. The stock belt was fine. I have had mine on for over a year and no dead battery. It does tend to get warm on hot days sitting in traffic with the engine idling. You will feel the difference.

Same here as Maryland Stang and I bet my belt had 50K miles on it. Did not slip at all.
